Ghosts season 4, episodes 8 and 9 brought us Ghosts-mas again. This time, Jay’s parents came to visit, and it was clear it would be a disastrous event. It did bring us some exciting events, though.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Ghosts season 4, episode 8 and 9.

The winter finale brought us plenty of ghostly antics, with Nancy possessing Sam thanks to an issue with the leaky water heater. Well, it wasn’t just Sam who ended up possessed. Pete ended up accidentally possessing Jay.

For those who were wondering how Jay would end up getting to see the ghosts, this episode gave us the storyline we’d been waiting for. And it happened in a way we didn’t expect, and in a fun way.

Nancy proves her laid back ways can help in Ghosts

The first part of the two-part episode saw Sam and Jay’s mom, Champa, do some bonding. It was something Jay worried a lot about with Nancy in control of Sam’s body, but that turned out to be surprisingly beneficial. Nancy’s laid-back attitude was what Champa needed to see that Sam isn’t as stuck up as she seems.

Sadly, that wouldn’t help for too long. Sam was able to take over to get off the property—the only way to get ghosts out of bodies—but it came at the expense of crashing Champa’s new car. Of course, that led to Champa looking down on Sam once more.

Look, Sam can be a little too much. She certainly tries too hard at times, but she is sweet and she and Jay love each other. Champa is one of those difficult mothers-in-law. Don’t be like Champa! That’s all I have to say.

Jay gets to see the ghosts in the Ghosts season 4 fall finale

After three and a half seasons, it’s finally time for Jay to see the spirits in the house. It doesn’t happen in the way we expected, but it makes a lot of sense for the events of the episode.

Since Pete can cross the ghost boundary, walking over that boundary isn’t going to eject Pete from Jay’s body. So, Sam and the other spirits need to find another way to handle it. They go online to find a video about ghost exorcisms.

Well, it works, but not the way intended. Everyone theorizes that since the exorcism called for the evil spirit to be ejected, and since nobody is as good as Pete, it meant that Jay was ejected. So, he’s a spirit and he’s able to see all the other spirits in the house.

Everyone except Sas is excited to get a chance to talk to Jay. The only reason Sas isn’t all that excited is because he’s dealing with Thor spreading his secret—that he’s a virgin. This is a small side story that isn’t really needed for the episode considering everything else that is going on. It would just be nice for Sas to interact with Jay outside of the dream world.

The benefit of this was seeing how Thor and Sas met back in the day as ghosts, and we learned that Thor learned Lanape while watching the people interact on a day-to-day basis, making it very clear that Thor isn’t as dumb as everyone makes him out to be. The episode also brings the reminder that friendships shouldn't end just because of a new relationship. It's important to make time for everyone.

It was great to see Jay interact with the rest of the ghosts, though. He’s spent so long just hearing the stories, and now he gets to put names to the faces.

What also worked out great was seeing Pete get to be human for a while. I don’t think Utkarsh Ambudkar quite got Pete’s mannerisms down as well as Rose McIver did with Nancy’s, but he did a good job. There was a beautiful moment as Pete learned that his daughter was planning to move to Australia and decided to steal the car and head out to see Laura. Of course, that meant stealing Jay’s body, which nobody was happy about at first.

Jay managed to spy on his parents as they discussed Jay’s career of choice, and it made him realize that Pete did need this last moment with Laura. Pete hugging Laura was just what was needed to eject from Jay’s body. Without Jay inside the body, it turned Jay’s body into a zombie. Sam would need to act fast to get Jay’s body back to Woodstone Manor to get Jay back in there.

Overall, the episode gave us some great, touching moments mixed with the comedy. The ending was a touching moment as Jay showed that the restaurant would been called Mahesh. It was exactly what was needed for Mahesh to stop bugging Jay about his career dreams. Jay did also have a great reminder that Mahesh and Champa left India to allow their children to have the lives of their dreams, and this is it.

Would I like to see Jay be able to interact with the ghosts? Most definitely! Pete got to see just how lonely it is for Jay in the house since he couldn’t see the ghosts while possessing Jay, and I think that’s something Pete should want to change moving forward.

Ghosts is now on a break and will return on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS. Catch up on the series on Paramount+.
