Ghosts has never been afraid to end a season with a major cliffhanger, so it should have come as little surprise that season 5 closed out with a massive cliffhanger connected to the fate of one of the show’s core ensemble. Warning: there are spoilers for the season 5 finale ahead!
The super-sized Ghosts season 5 finale saw Sam and Jay racing to save Woodstone after learning that Tad had sold his controlling stake in their B&B to Evercreek Water, a corporation set on demolishing the house to build a data center. With their home and business on the line, Jay and Sam set out to save Woodstone by having it deemed a historical landmark, as doing so would prevent Evercreek from proceeding with their data center on the property.
Upon meeting with local historian Joe, Sam and Jay attempted to save the house by bringing up the ties the land shared to some of its departed spirits, but sadly Alberta, Isaac, Pete, and Thor’s connections weren’t strong enough to merit historical landmark status. Just when all hope seemed lost, Nancy revealed a secret she’d been holding onto for decades: she was the Lost Princess of Belford, Adeline Dunham.
It turned out that Nancy was a persona she chose when she decided to run away to start a new life, and she kept the truth about her identity a secret out of embarrassment. While Nancy abandoned her life as a princess, she did keep one thing from her old life: a necklace with her initials, which happened to still be in the manor. Sadly, finding the necklace wasn’t enough proof for Joe, so Jay, Pete, and Kyle headed out to London to locate a painting of Nancy to prove the necklace’s authenticity.
With a little help from Amunhotep, the ghost mummy who had passed through Woodstone in the show’s Halloween episode, the group was able to find the painting and send Joe a photo. This saved Woodstone, but the extended journey to London ended up taking a severe toll on Pete, who was disappearing little by little along the way as a result of being away from the manor for too long.
In the final moments of the season, Jay and Kyle raced to get Pete back to the manor in time before he vanished entirely. Unfortunately, before they made it to the house, Pete disappeared entirely, leaving fans to wonder whether he was gone forever or would materialize fully back at the manor. Thankfully, it seems fans won’t have to wait until 2027 for answers to Pete’s fate.
While Ghosts season 6 has been moved to CBS’s midseason schedule, the show will return in the fall for a Halloween and Christmas special, the first of which will be used to give fans answers about Pete’s fate.
As showrunner Joe Port revealed to Collider, the Halloween special will usher in a time jump and said time jump will allow the show the chance to bring fans up to speed on the various storylines, including the fate of Pete.
"So, yeah, we are going to do a time jump because when we come back, we're starting with a Halloween special that's, like, an hour-long Halloween special. So, we're going to pick up several months after the finale and catch up with what's been going on, and catch up on what's happening with Sam's movie and what's happening with the ghosts, and what has become of Pete, if anything. So, there's a lot to divine."
Given that the Halloween and Christmas specials will be part of season 6, it makes sense for the show to jump ahead, and it’s a relief to know that we aren’t going to have to wait until 2027 to learn what has happened to Pete. It will be interesting to see how the writers address Pete’s fate and how long they might make fans wait before revealing what happened to him when the Halloween special rolls around. We’re just excited to know we only have to wait until October for answers and not until 2027.
