Following the show's 25th anniversary and streaming service shuffle, a bit of unexpected news arrived for the future of the series. No, another season of the A Year in the Life revival hasn't been announced, and there's no word on the movie front. But there's an official documentary in the works at HBO Max, the first authorized doc from Warner Bros., the creators, and main star.
Lauren Graham set for Gilmore Girls documentary on HBO Max
Warner Bros. shared the exciting news of the Gilmore Girls documentary and was quickly backed up by series star Lauren Graham in an Instagram post that has now amassed over 1 million likes. The currently untitled film will be directed by Bonni Cohen and feature creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, executive producer Daniel Palladino, Graham, and more "key cast and crew."
In the documentary, we'll take a look behind the curtain for stories about how the series came together in its early days and the enduring legacy it has enjoyed in the decades after. Perhaps most thrilling for fans, the documentary promises "never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, and script pages," but there's one particular thing that would set it over the edge.
While Graham has spoken at length about her time on Gilmore Girls in various interviews and the pages of her books, fielding questions about what the future could hold in multiple press tours over the years, fellow leading star Alexis Bledel has taken a step back out of the spotlight. If the documentary was able to get our Rory on board, that would be the greatest win for fans.
Graham and Bledel recently reunited to present together at the Emmy Awards and celebrate the legacy of their series, but to have the both of them in a documentary together to reflect on their seven years (plus one revival series) playing one of the most iconic mother-daughter duos in television history would far eclipse any of our wildest dreams.
Even if they aren't interviewed together for the documentary, Bledel's individual insight into what it was like to play Rory, her thoughts on the character's trajectory now, and other thoughts we haven't heard from the actress before is plenty. After all, Gilmore Girls isn't what it is without the girls, plural, meaning Lorelai, Rory, and Emily.
An unauthorized documentary called Drink Coffee, Talk Fast has been in the works since last year and managed to interview a number of the show's cast members, including Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, Keiko Agena, Chad Michael Murray, and others, though Graham explained that she didn't participate since Sherman-Palladino weren't involved.
Graham's return with Sherman-Palladino for the upcoming HBO Max documentary comes on the heels of their co-authored book about Gilmore Girls that's set to hit book stores in fall 2027. Hopefully, the book and the film will be released closely together as companions for the optimal Gilmore celebration full of new stories, content, and everything we love.
