There will no facing movements for the military comedy, Going Dutch. The series has been cancelled by Fox after its two-season broadcast run. Starring Denis Leary, the show was a surprise when it was renewed after its first season and it's luck has now run out.
Veteran actor, Leary, starred as a discontent Colonel who takes over a struggling Army base where his daughter was a captain. The show itself had strong moments and episodes, but it seemed it failed to gather enough of an uptick or audience in its second season.
The father/daughter dynamic between Leary and Taylor Misiak (portraying captain Maggie Quinn), was the heart of the series.
One of its early strengths was it focused on their relationship and how the military can effect family relationships and had a sense of realism associated with what people go through who serve. This was displayed throughout the first season.
The second season went away from that and focused more on slapstick comedy and more farsical situations the military characters found themselves in. It did not seem to resonate with an audience.
In its first season, it averaged over 1 million viewers an episode during the early episodes before it began to fall off. The numbers continued to fall in season 2 with only one episode reaching more than 1 million viewers through the entire season.
The show just could gain any traction with new viewers and dipped from its first season. It did not top Hulu in streaming, where like most broadcast series, the episode is available to stream the next day after it airs. While it's Hulu viewership numbers are not avaiable, the show never seemed to break through wirh Hulu viewers to gain traction on the platform in the way other shows have.
The change in tone, viewership on Fox and streaming numbers seems to be the three strikes that led to its cancellation.
M*A*S*H was a long running series and still is popular despite it ended in 1983. But since that comedies involving the military have not had as much success.
Enlisted, Major Dad and now Going Dutch are now among the different shows who have tried to capture the magic of M*A*S*H. It may be due to current events and the changing climate.
With the military comedy canceled, it will be interesting to see if Fox will pivot to other comedy series. Animal Control currently is the only live-action comedy Fox has heading into the next season.
If fans of the Going Dutch series wish to watch the entire show they can continue to look to Hulu. They might want to enjoy a rewatch soon, though, as it may be taken of the platform due to its cancellation.
