Grey's Anatomy is about to head into a lengthy break on ABC
It’s that time of year again. You know the time of year. It’s when the TV shows take their winter break. Grey’s Anatomy will air its last 2024 episode on Thursday, Nov. 21, and that’s it for a few months.
The break is going to be a lengthy one. That shouldn’t be all too surprising considering recent years. It’s also not the only show getting a lengthy break, as the whole of TGIT is taking a few months off before returning with midseason premieres.
When will Grey’s Anatomy season 21 return?
ABC has set January premieres and midseason returns. Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 9 will air on Thursday, March 6. Yes, that means we’re getting ready for a three-and-a-half-month break! It’s going to be hard, but it will be worth it.
The show will return with the rest of the TGIT lineup. 911 kicks things off as usual, and then we’ll get episodes of Doctor Odyssey and Grey’s Anatomy. The long-running medical drama will be back in the 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot again.
One of the good things about the long break is that it means fewer breaks in the middle of the schedule. Look at how annoying the week-on-week-off approach is during March and April. By Grey’s not coming back in January, there’s no need to worry about that. It’s the reason we’re loving Will Trent not returning until January because it means a limited chance of breaks in the schedule!
What are the chances of Grey’s Anatomy being renewed?
We’re also at that time of year when we look at the chances of shows being canceled or renewed. Considering how popular Grey’s remains to be for ABC, we’re expecting a renewal. This is one of those shows that deserves to go out with a bang and being given a final season order rather than being canceled abruptly.
Right now, the show is last in the list of ABC shows in the linear ratings. There are only five scripted shows running right now, though. Plus, the show airs in the 10 p.m. ET/PT time slot, so what do we really expect? This time slot is a difficult one, and at least an older show stands a better chance in it than a newer series.
We’ll have to keep an eye on things when the likes of Will Trent and The Rookie return. It will also be interesting to see how Thursdays perform with unscripted shows and linear airings of a Hulu series. If they perform better, then it could be problematic for Grey’s Anatomy, but with so little in terms of scripted, things are looking good for the medical drama’s renewal.
Grey’s Anatomy airs its fall finale on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 10/9c on ABC. Catch up on the season on Hulu.
