Grey's Anatomy season 21 will return in 2025 (but there's a lengthy wait)

The wait is on for some shows to return. Grey's Anatomy is one of them, with a wait until March 2025.

As much as we would love to see Grey’s Anatomy season 21 return in January 2025, that’s not going to happen. We do at least have a small light at the end of the tunnel.

With shows currently on their winter breaks, eyes are on when they will return. This is where we get some bad news, as not all shows will make their returns in January 2025. While some shows only have to wait until February to come back, other shows have a much longer break.

Grey’s Anatomy is one of those shows with the much longer break. When will it be back, and what can we expect?

Grey’s Anatomy season 21 returns in March 2025

Technically, the show will still return in winter 2025. If you’re like me and follow the Solstices and Equinoxes rather than the idea that the start of March is the start of spring, then you’ll agree that the start of March is winter.

We did know about the delay ahead of time. ABC made it clear ahead of the fall finale that we’d have to wait until March. We were then reminded with the promo for the winter premiere. Of course, that doesn’t mean everyone read the date, and it doesn’t stop us from being disappointed that the wait is so long.

But put Thursday, March 6, 2025 in your diary. That’s when Grey’s Anatomy returns.

Why this long break is good for Grey’s Anatomy

As much as we’re disappointed about the break, it’s actually a good thing for the series. At first, a lot of people are going to complain, but then think about what it means for the schedule once it is back. While the likes of Chicago Fire and NCIS have an on-off schedule to make sure the remaining episodes stretch to May, Grey’s Anatomy won’t need that. There are enough episodes for the weeks left available, except for maybe one week around Easter weekend.

Consistency is important for the show. How annoying is the on-off schedule? It’s hard to tell if a show is on each week and plan around it. With the longer break, planning Thursday nights will be much easier.

Grey’s Anatomy will return on Thursday, March 6.
