Since the second season of Shifting Gears finished airing on ABC in February 2026, fans have been waiting until we can finally reunite with the Parker family. While the network renewed the Tim Allen sitcom for season 3, we're going to have to remain patient for the third season to premiere. The series has been pushed to the midseason schedule for an early 2027 premiere.
But that doesn't mean that there aren't exciting updates to share about Shifting Gears season 3 until the calendar flips to next year. This summer, series star Kat Dennings joined TikTok and has been sharing her favorite things, beauty tips, and 2 Broke Girls nostalgia with fans, and her latest video combined all three and also included an update about season 3.
Shifting Gears season 3 begins filming in August 2026
In the TikTok video Dennings posted on July 26, the actress shared the secret behind the iconic lip combo worn by her character Max Black in 2 Broke Girls and slipped in a mention of Shifting Gears season 3. Dennings reached out to her makeup artist Jill Cady from the CBS sitcom to find out what brands she wore in the past. Dennings also mentioned she's going to see Cady soon.
"I'm going to see Jill, my makeup artist, in a few weeks because we're starting a new season of Shifting Gears on ABC. Tune in. It's cute," Dennings said to fans, revealing that not only does she still work with her 2 Broke Girls makeup artist but that Shifting Gears season 3 begins filming in "a few weeks," meaning August. That's probably much sooner than fans had likely expected given the delay.
Dennings offered a vague date, but she still revealed when Shifting Gears season 3 begins filming. According to the ticketing website 1iota, the first taping for the sitcom's third season takes place on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026 in Los Angeles. Five more tapings are currently scheduled for Aug. 25, Sept. 1, Sept. 15, Sept. 22, and Sept. 29 with more surely to be added later.
Even though a lot of the broadcast television series have already gotten back to filming or will begin production very soon, fans probably assumed that Shifting Gears would also delay filming much later this year or even early next year since episodes won't begin rolling out until sometime in early 2027. But that's not the case! Season 3 will have episodes in the can before it even premieres.
ABC hasn't confirmed how many episodes the third season will have, but we can venture to assume that once again, the series will not have a full 22-episode order like fellow ABC comedy Abbott Elementary. But with Scrubs season 2 only having 10 episodes, Shifting Gears will take its timeslot when the medical comedy's fall run ends, lending toward a 10 or 13-episode season.
It's too soon to predict exactly when Shifting Gears season 3 will premiere on ABC next year, but considering Scrubs season 2 will likely premiere in October and possibly conclude in either December or January, we can tentatively pencil in the sitcom for a premiere in either January or February 2027.
