The One Chicago shows aren’t the only Wolf Entertainment series taking the week off, as the Law & Order shows are also taking the week off. There will be no new episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU airing on April 16, with NBC sending the shows into reruns for the night.
The good news is that this is our final break of the season, which is also why NBC had to send the shows into reruns rather than airing new episodes on April 16. While NBC has reduced the episode orders for many shows, all five of the Wolf Entertainment dramas received 21-episode orders this season. The seventeenth episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU aired on April 9, which meant after their broadcast, both shows had just four episodes left in their seasons. This is where NBC’s scheduling dilemma came into play.
While there are four new episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU’s current seasons, NBC had five weeks of programming to fill. This meant that NBC had to schedule at least one final break for both Law & Order shows sometime between April 9 and their finales on May 14.
NBC decided to take that break in the season on April 16, which means NBC will be able to air the remaining four episodes of both Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU without any interruption beginning with the release of episode 18 on April 23. This means that once we get through this final night without new episodes, we’ll have four consecutive weeks of new Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU coming our way as the two shows wrap up their current seasons.
Interestingly, NBC chose not to keep The Hunting Party on a similar release schedule as the Law & Order shows. There will be a new episode of The Hunting Party airing on April 16, which will result in the show wrapping its season a week earlier than the Law & Order shows.
