Our favorite SVU detectives will be returning to the screen soon, and we now know how they will be paired up!
Law & Order: SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas told TVLine that the squad's season 28 pairings will be Sgt. Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and Det. Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane) and Capt. Renee Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly) and Det. Jake "Griff" Griffin (Corey Cott).
However, Fazekas also teased some potential changes as the season progresses, adding, "I still like to mix things up."
Last season, we saw a bunch of different pairing variations. This was necessary, given all the changes the SVU squad went through in season 27, including Detective Joe Velasco's (Octavio Pisano) exit and the addition of Detective Griffin. More importantly, the dynamic partnerships gave us a glimpse of the team's chemistry, which likely helped Fazekas decide on season 28's semi-permanent pairings.
For example, Captain Curry and Detective Griffin's unique dynamic in season 27 showed that the duo has the potential to be a really interesting pairing in season 28.
Last season, Curry and Griffin had a mentor/mentee vibe. Before Griffin, Curry was the "new guy" and had to learn the ropes at SVU. As a result, she knew better than anyone what it was like to join a group of detectives who already had established relationships. This made her the perfect person to educate Griffin on the dynamics at SVU.
Curry was also the first to recognize that Griffin was secretly looking into his father's partnership with Chief Tynan. As a former Internal Affairs detective, Curry most likely had a healthy suspicion of Griffin when he started acting strange. It was her job to pick up on those clues to root out corrupt cops. However, we're sure a part of Curry just wanted to help a junior detective. She knew adjusting to SVU could take time, and while not privy to all the context, Curry knew something was wrong.
That being said, it will be interesting to see what Curry and Griffin's dynamic looks like in season 28. Griffin will most likely still be dealing with the emotional fallout from learning the truth about his father, and he might need someone to confide in now that he doesn't have Chief Tynan. Curry has a lot of wisdom she could offer the detective as he navigates an uncertain time. It'd also be fun to see the two become friends. Curry may already be a captain, but she's probably closer to Griffin's age than they make it seem.
Season 28 of Law & Order: SVU premieres Oct. 8, at 9/8c on NBC.
