We’ve seen a lot of action and a lot of trauma on season 2 of Marshals. And we ended last week on a charged moment as Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Cruz (Ash Santos) tracked down their suspect to his hiding spot. And he, in turn, decided to trip a failsafe explosive. That left us wondering what the fallout would be. This week’s episode, “Secret Weapon,” answers that question and more. Let’s dive in. SPOILERS BELOW.

The explosion was big, but not big enough to be the missing explosives. It also left Kayce and Cruz shaken but not damaged. That leaves the team searching for the rest of the explosives, which leads to the discovery of additional tire tracks. That suggests another vehicle and more to this issue.

That puts the team on Derek McCoy, an old connection who Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) was tracking before losing the trail prior. So, they put the focus on McCoy, which means making a raid on his family compound. Things don’t go according to plan, leading to one member of the family escaping.

Kayce tracks the runner to a barn, which quickly collapses. While the team thinks Kayce has gone rogue, he’s trapped in the rubble. He has to render aid to his suspect and find a way out. As he does, he gets a lead on a white van that is likely carrying the bomb.

Meanwhile, inside, the team discovers a secret. That leads Cruz to put pressure on Eve (Whitney Palmer), which provides some more leads. It confirms the bomb, and with Kayce’s intel, they have a suspect and a vehicle. They also have a target—the bank that is taking the family land.

So, the team heads toward the bank headquarters. But it turns out there is no bomb there. The bank executives are at an event at a fancy hotel. So, the team makes its way toward the hotel, spotting the van in traffic. They are able to keep the driver trapped and sneak up, taking him out and ensuring the bomb won’t go off.

Personal issues

While the mission is a success, there is still a lot going on for the team. Cal has been wrestling with his treatment and the pressure from Harry (Brett Cullen). But, in the wake of the victory, Harry expresses his confidence. He’s not only confident in Cal as a leader but also that he’ll make a recovery. He tells Cal the decision on a temporary leader is up to him. In the end, he taps Cruz to fill in while he’s gone. But is she ready?

Cal, meanwhile, winds down the day at the bar chatting with Maddie (Morgan Lindholm). Their relationship is going well, but Cal still can’t bring himself to share his medical news. That has him and Miles (Tatanka Means) at a distance. Maddie is beginning to notice, but Cal brushes it off, for now.

Meanwhile, Miles has his own visitor, Shane Whitebear (Duke Davis Roberts). He comes in peace and with an offer. He plans to run for chairman. And he wants Miles to support him and a new vision for the future.

Belle (Arielle Kebbel), meanwhile, is dealing with her own problem. The casino suit (Walker Hare) pressed her family as the deadline closed in. She knows she needs to do something, so she goes to him. Turns out she has information on his family and the potential to ruin his daughter’s life. She uses that as leverage to buy more time, which seems to work, for now.

Kayce retreats back to East Camp. He’s enjoying a quiet night and some light gun cleaning when he gets a visitor—Cruz. She has been struggling with nightmares and visions. Her time being taken hostage has made it difficult for her. She comes clean to Kayce, who understands and offers compassion. He offers to make her tea and provide a safe space. She manages to drift off to sleep on the couch.

Kayce and Cruz have had a close relationship throughout the series. He is the one she leans on in times of trouble, and he feels the same. What is this leading to? It’s clear that they need and understand each other.

We continue to get the balance of cases and personal issues. I enjoy that balance, and the way we’re building into these characters. I enjoyed the way we got some movement on the issues in this episode. There’s some great potential for more character development in future episodes.
