We might still be weeks away from the Matlock season 2 finale on CBS, but there's already some exciting news to share about the episode! The network hasn't spilled the beans on what to expect from the finale just yet, but a new guest star has boarded the series for the season 2 finale, and the casting brings an unexpected reunion for a past small-screen favorite.
Golden Globe-winning Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez will appear in the Matlock season 2 finale, and while details haven't been shared on the character and storyline, a star this big means we should expect a juicy storyline! There's no intel ahead of the finale on whether Rodriguez will be playing a client for Jacobson Moore or if she will be playing a lawyer going against the team.
Along with the announcement that Rodriguez will be making her Matlock debut in the season 2 finale, Snyder Urman shared a statement expressing her excitement for the casting: "My heart is exploding with happiness that. She is pure magic and our collaboration on Jane was a highlight of my life. Having her on Matlock is a dream come true."

What we do know about Gina Rodriguez's guest spot in the Matlock season 2 finale is that we're getting another Jane the Virgin reunion. The legal drama and The CW comedy-drama have showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman in common, and Rodriguez will be teaming up with her old boss once again. We can also keep our fingers crossed for a potential second Jane reunion in the episode.
Yael Grobglas, who played Portia in Jane the Virgin, has recurred in Matlock since the first season as jury consultant Shae Banfield. Grobglas made her most recent appearance in season 2 episode 10, but for the sake of a maximum impact Jane the Virgin reunion, it would be wonderful if Jacobson Moore needed some jury consulting in the season 2 finale while Rodriguez is around.
Apart from Grobglas, and now Rodriguez, there haven't been too many more familiar faces from Jane the Virgin on the legal drama, though season 2 also introduced Justina Machado as a new recurring character. Machado previously guest starred in The CW hit across season 3 and season 5 as Darcy Factor. Snyder Urman's clearly leaving the door open to bring on her previous collaborators.
Rodriguez most recently starred in a series regular role in Will Trent season 3 on ABC as Assistant District Attorney Marion Alba, as pictured above. Since her role ended after the third season and she hasn't appeared in the current fourth season, the actress technically could be ready for a new series regular role or even a major recurring role. Fingers crossed there's a chance she'll be back in Matlock season 3.
CBS hasn't yet set an air date for the Matlock season 2 finale, though it's currently expected to air sometime in May 2026 following an upcoming break in the schedule. Unlike the first season, which contained 19 episodes, the second season is reported to feature 16, meaning there are only a handful of episodes left until we meet Gina Rodriguez's new character.
Stay tuned for further details, news, and episode recaps for Matlock season 2!
