Fans eagerly awaiting Michael Weatherly’s return to NCIS will be excited to find out some information on how he returns to the team! Coming fresh off of Paramount’s NCIS: Tony & Ziva spinoff, what brings Tony DiNozzo back into the crosshairs of his former colleagues?
Entertainment Weekly provided a picture of Weatherly’s return, which showrunner Steven D. Binder described. At this point, the only people around who worked with Tony were Agent Tim McGee and Jimmy Palmer. Although Tony made a brief appearance for former Medical Examiner Ducky Mallard’s funeral, we didn’t see him interact with anyone else besides McGee and Palmer.

Binder explained to EW that Tony is in Washington not to rejoin the team but to work on the expansion of Salus Mondiale, which is the name of his private security company. While in town, he is “drawn into a case that feels right at home in the NCIS universe.”
This will not only allow Tony to interact with the rest of the team he has not worked with, but also will show his evolution from a charismatic Lothario to being a parent to his daughter, Tali. Binder said being a parent has “given him a little more perspective, maturity, and emotional depth.”
Of course, fans are wondering if we will see Cote de Pablo return as Ziva David, but that has not been confirmed. But fans are hopeful that we will hear good news on how their relationship is doing, especially after the end of the spinoff featuring them and their daughter.
In bringing Weatherly back, Binder said his return was “one of those things a writer can only dream about. We’re beyond excited to have him return.”
Weatherly left the show after 13 seasons, in which Tony moved overseas to raise his and Ziva’s daughter, Tali, and eventually, fans got to see him streaming on Paramount+ for the Tiva spinoff. The spinoff ended with the couple reunited, so we hope that this is still the case when Tony returns, even if Ziva is not onscreen. However, since his arc is supposed to run through the season, there’s always a chance she will make an appearance somehow.
DiNozzo’s return is also timely, considering that his friend and former colleague McGee has just learned about his own secret son, who is in some sort of trouble that will likely cause tension between the latter and Wilmer Valderrama’s Agent Nick Torres. So we could get some scenes of the two friends talking about their lives in the midst of everything else happening in the NCIS world.
