Fans of Matlock may be worried that Matty and Olympia’s relationship will change, and one of the actresses is speaking up about that!

Matlock has become CBS’s biggest new hit series of the 2024-25 season, and for good reason. The show got initial attention for starring Oscar winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, an aged former attorney who joins the law firm of Jacobson Moore. Matty is soon working under Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall), who’s at first wary but realizes Matty’s skills at being unnoticed help cases.

However, the first episode ended with the massive twist that Matty is Madeline Kingston, a wealthy woman. Her daughter died of an opioid overdose and Matty believes someone at Jacobson Moore buried files that could have taken them off the streets earlier. She’s thus infiltrating the firm to find out the truth, with Olympia among the suspects.

Matty works with Olympia closely in Matlock

Each episode has Matty working on cases while also gathering evidence against the firm, with her ultimate goal being assigned to big pharma cases. She’s gotten to know Olympia, who still works with Julian (Jason Ritter), her soon-to-be ex-husband and son of the firm’s founder (Beau Bridges). That makes Matty feel guilty about lying to Olympia, even as she wonders if the other woman was tied in with the coverup.

The last episode had Matty experiencing a panic attack as the pressure of her lies and double life was getting to her. She was even set to quit only for Olympia to tell her she was being transferred to big pharma cases, exactly what Matty wanted.

That’s a good push for Matty, but it has fans worried this means fewer scenes with Olympia.

Are we getting more Matty/Olympia scenes?

Logically, if Matty is working in a completely different department in Jacobson Moore, that would mean she no longer reports to Olympia but rather to Julian. It might also mean less time with co-workers Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis).

However, speaking to TVLine, Marshall assured fans that Olympia won’t be stepping back but still working with Matty.

"No matter what Julian and I go through, we have processed all the different obstacles of working together, and we’re able to put those challenges, whether they’re personal or professional, to the side for the sake of the firm and the sake of the client. So you will still see Julian or Madeline needing my assistance, or me needing theirs. That connection won’t end just because Madeline shifts to big pharma."

The dynamic of the two women is interesting, as a flashback shows that they actually (literally) ran into each other long before Matty joined the firm, and Olympia doesn’t seem to remember it. They are bonding, but the big question is what happens when Olympia inevitably discovers Matty has been lying about who she is and why she joined the firm. She’ll no doubt feel a sense of betrayal yet could understand why Matty did it. If it turns out Julian or his father were involved in that coverup, it could shake things up more.

Thankfully, fans will know for sure as the show has been renewed for Season 2, and Matty’s quest should be wrapped up before the first season ends. So fans of Matlock can be assured that the series will still keep up the fun Matty/Olympia dynamic that’s helped make it a hit.
