Murder in a Small Town stages a Smallville reunion! Who is Erica Durance playing on the Fox drama?

Fox’s Murder in a Small Town has just gotten underway, but it’s taking an aspect few could expect in some big guest stars! See which Smallville co-star is coming on the next episode!

Based on the novels by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town focuses on Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), a former big-city cop who relocates to the small town of Gibsons, British Columbia. He figures it’ll be a nice and quiet job as the local police chief only to start uncovering crimes in the town, including murder. 

Alberg does get help from his fellow cops and a relationship with local librarian Cassandra Mitchell (Kristen Kreuk), who he starts dating. While it appeared the show was just a standard mystery, it’s getting attention thanks to some surprisingly high-profile guest stars.

The 90-minute premiere had Oscar nominee James Cromwell as an elderly resident who’s suspected of a dark murder. The third episode featured former Castle star Stana Katic as a woman tied to her brother’s death with a dark secret. 

Now, previews for episode 4 reveal another big guest star who has a special connection to Kristen Kreuk!

Who is guest-starring in Murder in a Small Town?

As revealed by TVLine, Episode 4, “Prized Possessions,” will have Kreuk reuniting with her old Smallville co-star Erica Durance. The Superman-themed WB/CW hit was the breakout role for both women, with Kreuk as Lana Lang and Durance as Lois Lane. Durance will play Emma O’Brea, an old friend of Cassandra’s who may be involved in a murder. 

"At a fundraiser for her arts center, Cassandra reunites with a childhood friend who later discovers that her husband has gone missing and that a crime scene has unfolded in her home. Cassandra shares clues with Alberg as he investigates the mysterious disappearance, unveiling secrets and the truth behind a marriage."

Durance is just the latest in a line of big guest stars for the show, as future episodes will star Paula Patton and Noah Reid. A TV crime series using guest stars in each episode is nothing new (see Poker Face and Elsbeth), yet it is notable how Town is utilizing them so early in its run. However, it does spark the series up and (as with Katic’s guest star turn) keeps audiences guessing to the character's guilt.

It’s obvious Durance was cast just for a reunion with Kreuk and the two actresses look good working together again. So any fan of Smallville will want to check this episode out and see how Murder in a Small Town continues its fun early run on Fox.
