NCIS: Origins season 2, episode 16 showed the beginning of the end of Diane and Gibbs’s marriage while the team worked security for Admiral Jacob Cane, who is coming to give a speech amid the SECNAV’s decision to reduce the fleet in the area, meaning it could affect the economy. But things quickly go sideways when it appears someone is attempting to kill him.

In addition to working the case, Gibbs must also deal with the arrival of his father, Jackson, who he hasn’t had a great relationship with. It’s only made more difficult when his dad brings Shannon’s rule box with him, which Gibbs thought he had thrown out.

Jackson Gibbs understands his son more than Gibbs thinks

While Diane is looking forward to meeting her father-in-law, at the same time, this is also when Gibbs is working a lot and is unable to make time for her. This leads her to pour her heart out to Jackson, feeling as though the memory of Shannon is still between them. While the problem presents itself as Gibbs not repairing some cabinets, it’s more like he can’t bear to move forward in his life.

Gibbs’s dad appears to get along with everyone, much to his disbelief. He has lunch with Kowalski and even has a conversation with Lala. During their night watch with the admiral and his wife, Julie, Lala asks Gibbs about his rule box, but he is tight-lipped. Even though it appears there are feelings there, talking about Shannon even with Lala is something he can’t do.

As the case moved forward, in which they were trying to find out who was after Admiral Cane and had critically injured his colleague, Deputy Commander Leonard Miller, Gibbs determined the attacker was actually after Julie, the admiral's wife.

It turned out Julie’s own assistant, Maggie, had been stealing from them, and when Julie began to figure out what was happening, Maggie convinced her boyfriend, Daryl, to attack Leonard and steal his PDA. When they were about to go after Julie, Gibbs and the rest of the team tried to get a hold of Lala.

Lala and Vera had been with Julie and were able to subdue Daryl before making their arrests. In the end, everyone was alright, and Miller would also recover from his stab wound. By the end of the episode, Gibbs and Diane had agreed to separate, with her moving full time to Los Angeles. Even so, they didn’t actually get divorced, which older Gibbs lamented about. He admitted his dad was right and he didn’t love Diane the way he should have. He cared about her, but his heart was always with Shannon, even if he may have had current feelings for someone else.

With Diane now, sort of, out of the picture, this may mean we’ll see movement on where Gibbs and Lala go from here. Although there's still some history there we have not seen, and we wonder if we’ll see Diane again and in what capacity.

The season is almost over, and we’re looking forward to seeing what NCIS: Origins has in store for Gibbs and company in the final two episodes of season 2.

NCIS: Origins airs Tuesdays on CBS at 9/8c.
