5 reasons why Monkey Man is NOT for kids (what parents need to know)
By Sandy C.
There are several great movies premiering in theaters (and streaming) this weekend, but these features are NOT for children. Sorry, kiddos, this movie weekend is for the adults! One movie in particular that young eyes should not watch? Monkey Man.
This weekend, audiences will find out if Dev Patel's Monkey Man is worth all the hype. Since the film's debut at South by Southwest, critics have been praising the story and stellar performances. Directed by Patel (his directorial debut), Monkey Man tells the story of Kid aka Monkey Man (Patel), a man determined to get revenge on those responsible for his mother's death. Kid may be able to round up allies, but will it be enough to take down the corrupted organizations working against him?
In addition to Dev Patel, Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Sharlto Copley, and others. It is playing exclusively in theaters. A streaming date for the movie has not been confirmed. We will be updating this page as soon as we learn more details on the streaming release. But being a Universal Pictures production, once Monkey Man leaves the big screen, it'll likely stream on Peacock.
At the time of this writing, Monkey Man has a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 85% from critics. A score from audiences is not yet available. Now, if you were considering making this a family trip to the movies, pause! Here are five reasons why Monkey Man is not appropriate for kids to watch.
Gore and nudity are not the only reasons why Monkey Man has an R rating
Monkey Man is rated R for...pretty much everything in the book! Common Sense Media recommends the movie to teens 16 and older. I couldn't agree more with the suggestion. I would even say 17 or 18, depending on the maturity level of your teenager. After all, you know your kid best! These are the reasons Monkey Man very much deserves its rating:
- Strong violence
- Gore
- Drug use
- Sexual content/nudity
- Language throughout
For most parents of older teens, language and some drug use is not too big of a deal. Most teenagers know better than to repeat what they hear and understand these situations. However, sexual content and nudity? Immediately no. According to the source, there are brief, yet multiple, scenes of nudity in a brothel. As for the violence, it is intense, bloody, and extremely graphic. Drug use is also featured throughout the movie.
Also in theaters this weekend (and not recommended for kids): The First Omen and Baghead. Searching for a family movie? In case you missed it, Wish is now streaming on Disney+!
