Arkasha Stevenson's prequel The First Omen may be the first horror movie out of the gate in April 2024, but it's not the only one we're getting! There are several other features that will bring horror fans plenty of fears and chills. Don't want to miss a single one? We're here to make sure you don't!
Horror fans, rejoice! April 2024 is a very generous month when it comes to our favorite movie genre. However, this month, every movie on our list here is rated R. This is great news for adult fans of horror, but children and teens? Not so much! Even if you have a kid who enjoys a fun scare, I don't recommend any of the movies below. After all, risking watching an R-rated picture is significantly different than watching a PG-13 movie with an 11-year-old, for example.
First up, we have The First Omen, opening the month on Friday, April 5. This is another chapter in The Omen movie franchise. Even though it's not a new, original idea, I've always enjoyed this movie series. And have you checked out the trailer (we link to it below, don't worry)? I love the vibe and mystery behind it. I can't wait to watch it.
April 2024 is also gifting us Baghead, Abigail, and two other movies you do NOT want to watch if you're afraid of spiders. Here's a quick list of the upcoming horror titles.
The best horror movies to watch in April 2024
- Bag of Lies, streams April 2 on Apple TV+
- The First Omen, in theaters April 5
- Baghead, streams April 5 on Shudder and AMC+
- Sting, in theaters April 12
- Abigail, in theaters April 19
- Infested, streams on Shudder April 26
From this list, the two movies you more than likely already knew about are The First Omen and Abigail. But Baghead is not one you want to miss! Though I have not seen the movie myself, I love international horror movies! Baghead dropped in the United Kingdom earlier this year and arrives in the United States on Friday, April 5. It's about a shapeshifting supernatural being...say less! The best part is that you don't need to go to the movie theater to watch it. Baghead will be available to stream on AMC+ and Shudder.
Also on Shudder this month, we are getting Infested. Now, most of us horror fans can stomach gore, violence, language, and the main components that make up the genre. But spiders? That's a huge no from me! Infested centers around an apartment building that has been infested by spiders. Will you be watching?
Sandy's top 3 horror movie picks: Bag of Lies, The First Omen, Abigail
Bag of Lies | |
---|---|
Where and when? | The movie will be available on Apple TV+ starting Tuesday, April 2. |
Rating: | Bag of Lies is rated R. |
Cast: | John Wells, Madison Pullins, Patrick Taft |
Quick Synopsis: | After the decline of his wife's health, Matt is willing to do anything to save her, even if he needs to take supernatural measures. |
Did anyone else think Bag of Lies and Baghead were the same movie? Not only because of the titles and head references, but the plot is also similar. Listen, I'll be watching both, but I hope these movies stand out from each other, or horror fans will be extremely disappointed. If I'm being honest, I'm more excited to watch Baghea. However, I wanted to give a feature spot to Bag of Lies because I feel it may have fallen under the radar for most people.
Bag of Lies is actually playing in select theaters beginning March 29. But when I say "select," I mean it. The movie's release will be very limited. This is why your best bet is to wait until April 2 to stream the movie on Apple TV+. So, what is the movie all about?
The story follows Matt, a man who is willing to do anything and everything to save his dying wife. When the opportunity to save his wife presents itself, Matt does not hesitate. Matt doesn't even give it much thought to the fact that this life-saving method involves dark, sinister magic. The consequences of turning to The Bag may be far worse than anything Matt or his wife could have ever imagined.
The First Omen | |
---|---|
Where and when? | Watch The First Omen in theaters starting Friday, April 5. |
Rating: | The First Omen is rated R. |
Cast: | Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga |
Quick Synopsis: | The First Omen serves as the prequel to the original movie, showcasing how the nightmares all began. |
In The First Omen, audiences follow Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), a young nun sent to Rome. Upon arriving, Margaret instantly feels like something is not right about that place. But Margaret never could have imagined the sinister nightmare she just walked into. There are many rumored intentions and conspiracies whispered in every corner, including the intention to welcome evil incarnate with the Antichrist.
The movie also stars Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga, Ralph Ineson, Bill Nighy, and others. The First Omen is rated R for brief graphic nudity, violent content, and disturbing images. It is the sixth movie in the horror franchise, with the first dating back to 1976. Not only does the trailer seem promising, but we are in good hands with scream queen Nell Tiger Free! The actress is no stranger to the world of horror. Fans may recognize the star from the Apple TV+ series Servant, where she portrays Leanne.
Abigail | |
---|---|
Where and when? | Abigail arrives on Friday, April 19, only in theaters. |
Rating: | The movie is rated R. |
Cast: | Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir |
Quick Synopsis: | A group of kidnappers regrets taking on the job of holding the daughter of a powerful being captive when they realize they are the ones in danger. |
Now it wouldn't be a proper horror movie list without it including at least one movie featuring an evil child, would it? The monster-horror picture follows a group of people who are offered $50 million if they kidnap Abigail, the daughter of a powerful man. Well, he's more than just a regular man, he is a powerful figure in the underworld. But we should point out that the kidnappers have no idea. They are all about to learn that they're the ones who are in terrible danger. And there's no way out.
Abigail is rated R for strong, bloody violence, brief drug use, pervasive language, and gore. A kid may be at the center of the story, but this movie is not for children! The cast includes Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, Kathryn Newton, and others.
