Chicago Med is going into a milestone season. NBC renewed it for a 10th season, along with Chicago Fire and Chicago PD being renewed for their 13th and 12th seasons respectively.

The Chicago Med season 9 finale airs on Wednesday, May 22. There are a lot of questions about how it will end. After all, there’s usually some sort of cliffhanger. As much as we’re ready to find out what that will be, we also want to get an idea of what to expect when the series does return.

Yes, Chicago Med season 10 is officially happening

The good news arrived in April, when NBC confirmed that it had renewed five of the six Dick Wolf shows on the network. The only one not to get a renewal was Law & Order: Organized Crime, which did eventually get a renewal but with the caveat that it would move to Peacock. All other shows would remain on NBC.

The fall 2024 schedule shows that Chicago Med will be back where it belongs. It will air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

There isn’t a set release date just yet. Premiere dates are usually set in June or July, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for that. That said, we're expecting the show to return sometime in late September!

Will everyone return for the 10th season of the medical drama?

As of right now, there are no signs that anyone is leaving the series. The eighth season brought us so much change, that the series may want to keep things steady going into this milestone season. Of course, the finale could bring a surprise exit in the same way that we have the surprise exit of Will Halstead in the season 8 finale.

With this in mind, we should see the following return for Chicago Med season 10:

Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin
Marlyne Barrett as Maggie Lockwood
Oliver Platt as Dr. Daniel Charles
Steven Weber as Dr. Dean Archer
Jessy Schram as Dr. Hannah Asher
Dominic Rains as Dr. Crockett Marcel
T.V. Caprio as Grace Song
Alet Taylor as Liliana Wapnirarski
Luke Mitchell as Dr. Mitch Ripley

We probably won’t see all the characters in all episodes. The One Chicago franchise has moved toward a model that sees some actors out of episodes here and there as a way to save money. We are likely to see that continue as other shows follow suit.

What to expect in Chicago Med season 10

No storylines have been confirmed just yet. A lot of the focus of the series is on the medical cases that happen each week. We see the doctors take on a wide range of problems, including broken bones, tumors, and mental health issues. The latter is important as there is a move away from the stigma around mental health.

Of course, one thing we’re looking out for is more between Asher and Ripley. The two have been in a will-they-won’t-they situation all of this season, and it looks like they finally “have.” Will they stay together in the new season, or is this yet another workplace relationship doomed to fail?

How many episodes will be in season 10?

While the ninth season saw a drop to 13 episodes, we’re not expecting to see that again. The shorter season was due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike action in summer 2023. Since there isn’t likely to be a problem that affects writing and filming this summer, we should see production start up as planned. That’s especially the case with a fall premiere planned.

It is possible that we won’t get the full 22 episodes, though. Chicago Med season 9 was going to get between 18 and 20 episodes before the strike reduced the episode count further. This was another cost-cutting method to help keep the series on the air. Costs of production are still going up and the linear ratings across the board still keep going down, so a reduction in episode count to around 18 episodes may be necessary.
