Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 episode 7 introduced us to Dr. Jill Gideon, played by Felicity Huffman. It also gave us a little bit of a break from the Gold Star investigation as a whole as the team worked to find out who was killing men by completely disintegrating their bodies. Plus Voit managed to make another move with the help of his lawyer. Let’s go over what happened in the episode.

This episode was actually quite disturbing and had many twists and turns involving the case. Men were being killed by being doused with a concoction of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The team had to determine if these were racially motivated murders or if the killer saw himself in them. Plus, they also had to figure out what they all had in common.

Eventually, they discovered the men received emails claiming that they had raped the man’s wife and she gave birth to a baby. We also saw the unsub’s point of view, who we learn is named Roger.

He had been left to deal with raising their infant son, while his wife was struggling with depression. Roger had been killing the men to help her heal from her vicious attack. However, she said there was one more man they needed to find.

At first, it did look like at least one of the men had a history of sexual violence. But then JJ discovered that he only got that charge because he had gone outside a club to relieve himself and a child was nearby, so the DA got overzealous. Then the most recent victim turned out to be a gay man, so she began to realize there was no rape involved.

More than likely, the man was seeing himself in the men and was punishing himself for a perceived infraction. They learned the men who were murdered were all sperm donors.

Their investigation eventually led them to Roger and Emma Song, who had been under the care of Dr. Maria Moreno, who had been reported missing. They were undergoing IVF treatments but there was no record of Emma giving birth.

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 episode 7 had a major twist in a twisted case

Roger has abducted Dr. Moreno to make her help his wife, who was bleeding heavily. But when he claimed to hear her screaming for help, she was confused. In a surprising twist, it actually turned out that Roger had suffered a break in reality due to his wife and child dying, likely during childbirth, although it was never confirmed that was the case.

In fact, we learned that he was the one who wanted to go through with the pregnancy despite Emma saying no and the doctor’s concerns about her health taking the pregnancy to term.

His mind was so wrapped up in guilt, he made up a story that his wife had been raped by multiple men. He was punishing himself by externalizing the threat to the innocent victims who did nothing wrong. It was really sad to see that even when he was arrested, he still fully believed his wife and son were alive.

While this was all going on, Emily worked with Tyler to find Dr. Jill Gideon and convince her to come to the BAU. They believe she can help with the Gold Star case since she likely could have had a part in writing the paper before Gideon and Rossi shelved it.

Emily tried to convince Jill to come back, but her own methods don’t work since Jill could see right through her methodology. Plus, we also found out she and Rossi had an affair before she broke things off. This explains why Dave did not want Emily to find her.

Jill looked surprised to find out about the paper getting into the wrong hands, so it’s possible she may be clueless about who is involved. If our theory is correct about her being involved, she could also be doing a good job of hiding it. But either way, we’re excited to see her and Rossi since it looks like there is plenty of history to dive into.

This episode was gruesome in so many ways and it was actually jarring to see just how far the show could go when put on a streaming service. Plus, it also looks like Voit is not done trying to stay a step ahead of the BAU. He even roped his lawyer into trying to contact Damien by threatening his wife. Will the team stop him before it goes too far?

We’re looking forward to seeing how the last few episodes of the season play out. Make sure to stay caught up with Criminal Minds: Evolution on Paramount+.
