Criminal Minds vet lands lead in Einstein procedural pilot (here's what we know)
There’s good news and bad news for Matthew Gray Gubler fans. The good news is he will be on television again! Unfortunately, it will not be on Criminal Minds: Evolution. Instead, the actor who portrayed Dr. Spencer Reid will now be playing a different kind of genius.
Created by Andy Breckman of Monk fame and Randy Zisk, who is an executive producer, the new series Einstein follows the famed Albert Einstine’s great-grandson, Lew. The character is described as being “brilliant but directionless.” He’s a professor at Princeton, but trying to live up to his name is difficult, especially when he gets into trouble and is otherwise considered to be irreverent.
The show will follow Einstein as the professor finds himself aiding a detective with cases that are more challenging than others. He becomes entangled in this particular career after a run-in with the police leads them to see how he could be useful in solving cases they come across.
What does this new role mean for Matthew Gray Gubler returning to Criminal Minds: Evolution?
Einstein is based on a dramedy set in Germany, which follows a young man who becomes a consultant after trying to steal drugs to help him take care of a medical condition. This is the third time this has been an attempt to bring the series to the US, and it looks like third time’s the charm!
Gubler will be playing the title role, which will mean that any chance of seeing him on Criminal Minds: Evolution is slim. On the show itself, his character was said to be away on assignment to give a reason why he wasn’t with the BAU.
Now does this mean we won’t see him return to the series at all? It depends on how well Einstein does in terms of being picked up by CBS. It could mean that Gubler might be available to drop in for a cameo or two. Actor Shemar Moore, who played Derek Morgan and has the starring role on SWAT has previously expressed interest in returning to the show if he is requested.
Even if we don’t see Gubler return to Criminal Minds, which he was part of for 15 years before the series ended prior to the reboot, it will still be fun to watch him play another role as a different kind of genius!
