Fans of the book series will note immediately that each episode in season 1 is named after a chapter from the titular novel by Rick Riordan. They’re also a dead giveaway for when key moments from the book are set to take place, so you’ll be able to countdown to when the television adaptation of your favorite scene in the book will take place. If you’re going in with basically no book knowledge like myself, this is bound to be a ride full of new discoveries and excitement.
We, however, can glean some information from the synopses for the two premiere episodes written by Riordan and showrunner Jon Steinberg. In the season 1 debut, “I Accidentally Vaporized My Pre-Algebra Teacher,” Percy Jackson learns about his powers after he’s accused of attacking his classmate during a field trip to the Met. The ball keeps rolling for him toward peril after he’s expelled, his mom reveals he’s a demigod, and the monsters hunting him are not a thing of myth.
In episode 2, “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom,” Percy is now at Camp Half-Blood where he’s still navigating the trials and tribulations of fitting in including dealing with bullies just like he did before he found out he’s a demigod. There’s just the added ordeal of his mother's sacrifice along with finding out who his father is during, of all things, Capture the Flag!
It’s an exciting time to be a Disney+ subscriber who’s looking for more to enjoy on the platform besides Star Wars and Marvel. Percy Jackson and the Olympians will carry us into the new year with something to look forward to each week and hopefully for many years to come. Don’t forget to stick around for the mid-credit preview every episode for a look at what to expect next!
