It has been nearly two decades since the last National Treasure movie, subtitled National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, premiered. However, a series, National Treasure: Edge of History, based on the movies premiered on Disney+ in December 2022. Still, it doesn't beat the movie adaptations. So we're all wondering, is a third movie even happening? Here's what we know.

The original movie, National Treasure, was released in 2004, two decades ago. The action-adventure film stars Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian in search of the Freemason treasure. To find it, Gates will need to get his hands on the map, conveniently located behind the United States Declaration of Independence.

Gates isn't alone in his hunt, but he is also not the only one who will risk it all to find it. The movie also stars Sean Bean, Harvey Keitel, Diane Kruger, Christopher Plummer, and others. The sequel, Book of Secrets, followed three years after in 2007, also starring Cage. A third movie has been in discussion for years, but we have little to no updates.

Is the lack of National Treasure 3 updates a bad sign?

The last update to come in is from The Hollywood Reporter, which shared that Chris Bremmer was working on writing the third movie. This report, however, is from 2020. Later, in 2021, Deadline commented on the movie, hinting that it was still in the works. The same sources teased that Nicolas Cage is rumored to reprise his role in the upcoming movie. It has been radio silent since, with only Cage briefly expressing his disappointment by the lack of updates, which doesn't leave us very optimistic.

There has not been an official announcement from the studio, no cast news, teasers, nada. And the fact that the Disney+ series based on the movies was canceled isn't exactly a good sign. Now, does this mean a third movie is not happening? Not necessarily. But I think we need to start getting comfortable with the idea that it may not happen. Because, if it does, it's not going to be this year or next. We are in for a long wait! Of course, as soon as we have more updates, we'll update this post!
