Gossip Girl and 8 other canceled shows on Max that we won't see in 2024
By Sandy C.
All shows must, eventually, come to an end, but for some, this ending is an abrupt one. When a series is canceled, the story feels incomplete. Even when a show is picked up for its final season, there's always that question of what if? But, it's nothing personal! If the numbers aren't there, a network won't hesitate to let go. That said, here are nine shows we won't be seeing new episodes of on Max in 2024 (or ever).
Max, formerly known as HBO Max, went through many changes, including the cancellation of eight shows. Make no mistake, though, the streamer continues to be the go-to for quality content and major film features. Still, we're looking back at all canceled shows in 2023.
Cancelled TV shows on Max
Before we highlight a few of the cancelled shows on Max, here's a quick list:
- South Side (three seasons)
- Titans (four seasons)
- Doom Patrol (four seasons)
- The Other Two (three seasons)
- Avenue 5 (two seasons)
- Gossip Girl (two seasons)
- Perry Mason (two seasons)
- Warrior (three seasons)
Doom Patrol and Titans
The DCEU became smaller with the cancellations of Doom Patrol and Titans on Max. After James Gunn became the new DC Studios co-chief, a lot of decisions were made, but the cancellation of both of these shows was, reportedly, not up to Gunn. At the very least, both Doom Patrol and Titans were able to plan out their finales, allowing creators to wrap up the stories without cliffhangers.
Not to worry, the streamer still has a lot of DC content ahead, including The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell. As soon as we learn more, we'll be sure to update this post.
Avenue 5
Next up, we have Avenue 5, starring Hugh Laurie as the ship captain of a cruise ship that is knocked off course. The sci-fi comedy only sailed for two seasons due to low ratings. Unfortunately, despite the star-studded cast, which also includes Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Ethan Phillips, and others, the numbers were simply not there for Max to justify ordering another season.
Gossip Girl
One series we can't say we are shocked was cancelled by Max, is Gossip Girl. Initially, I was excited to check this one out, as a fan of the original. I expected a fun spin and loved the diversity of the cast. Sadly, it failed to impress, revealing the big mystery in the first episode, and eliminating the main thing that attracted fans to the original.
This new Gossip Girl was never able to figure out what it wanted to be. Giving fans problematic plots and controversial character stories. Max said XOXO after two seasons.
Perry Mason
Two seems to be the magic number at Max, as the series Perry Mason was also canceled after two seasons. This show served as the prequel to the original of the same name, focusing on the titular character and his journey to becoming a reputable lawyer in the 1930s.
Which of the above will you miss the most? Do you think any of these shows deserved another chance?
