Grey's Anatomy Season 21: Grey Sloan Memorial will open it's doors for another season
If there is one network we didn’t expect renewals from this early in the game, it was ABC. Only three episodes of TGIT shows have aired, and we already have excellent news. Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 is officially happening.
The news comes off the back of the 911 renewal. Sadly, Station 19 is still coming to an end with its current season, although fans continue to fight for the firefighter drama. With the strength of this recent season, I think it should get another season at least as well!
Back to Grey’s Anatomy and its renewal. It will bring the show into its 21st season. It doesn’t sound that surprising when you look at the figures that TVLine has offered. It continues to hold the position of longest-running medical drama.
A successful start for TGIT with 911 and Grey’s Anatomy
The series saw a downward tick in the linear ratings in recent years, but that changed in 2024. Thanks to its 911 lead-in, the show has ticked up in both the demo and the total audience figures. It now pulls in 3.5 million viewers with a 0.5 demo rating. This is still down from where it used to be in the linear ratings, but that’s the state of live TV as a whole and not just this series.
Season 20 has seen a huge change. Krista Vernoff stepped down as showrunner, with Meg Marinis taking over. That’s certainly been felt in the change of pacing and storylines in the first three episodes. While the new interns don’t quite has the same “MAGIC” as the original five, they have a strong presence on the show and a lot of heart.
The renewal is a no-brainer for ABC. Now we have to question whether the show and 911 will find a way to do some sort of crossover. After all, there’s nothing to prevent the two shows being set in the same universe, and who wouldn’t want to see Angela Bassett and Ellen Pompeo share some screentime?
Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 will likely premiere in fall 2024
Now for when the show will return. We’re expecting a fall return date.
There’s no doubt that ABC would have pushed for a fall return had the strike action not happened this summer. ABC simply saw the writing on the wall with the WGA strike and knew that fall premieres for scripted shows wasn’t going to happen.
There shouldn’t be anything stopping a fall return for the medica drama in 2024. I can see the TGIT lineup for the first two hours staying the same as it is right now, and it will be interesting to see what takes over the 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
