Grey's Anatomy spoilers: Showrunner Meg Marinis reveals Teddy Altman's fate ahead of season 20's premiere!
Grey's Anatomy is finally returning for season 20, and fans are eager to find out Teddy Altman's fate! Thankfully, we know early whether or not the intrepid doctor is surviving!
It's been a far longer wait than usual for Grey's Anatomy fans. Thanks to the WGA and SAG strikes in 2023, production on season 20 was delayed, with ABC holding back to get as many episodes in as they could. At last, the new season is coming on March 14 to push various storylines.
The biggest is the season 19 finale cliffhanger where Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) collapsed while doing a surgery. Teddy had been ignoring a toothache that was really the sign of a bigger medical issue. That left the interns scrambling to save both her and a coding patient.
So what happens to Teddy, and how will this affect the new season? We have answers!
Does Teddy Altman die in Grey's Anatomy season 20?
In a big preview for the season for TV Line, new showrunner Meg Marinis confirmed that yes, Teddy will survive as Grey's isn't going to bump off one of their biggest names this soon. However, she hinted Teddy wouldn't be the same.
"It is absolutely going to change her. That's part of the reason to tell the story, right? To see what it brings out in the character. We've seen Owen have a life-and-death situation, but we haven't seen Teddy recently have one. So like it would with anyone, it has an impact on her relationship with Owen, as well as with patients and how she treats other surgeons. It's not going to be one of those things where she recovers and forgets.""
Teddy and Owen have been having their share of ups and downs. In season 19 this included nearly having their careers wrecked and fighting to keep their relationship going. This new crisis will obviously shake them up further as Owen knows first-hand what it's like to be close to death and will want to help Teddy out. The question is if Teddy will accept it.
Season 20's debut, "We've Only Just Begun," picks up a day after the season 19 finale, so be prepared to be thrown back into the thick of the action with Teddy's procedure and everything the doctors were dealing with before her collapse. One thing we can be grateful for is Teddy sticking around even if she might not be the same as Grey's Anatomy builds up for a new year.
Grey's Anatomy season 20 premieres Thursday, March 14 at 9/10c on ABC.
