Grey's Anatomy characters need to stop keeping big things from those they love

One of the biggest tropes in TV is characters keeping big things from those they love. Grey's Anatomy is doing it with Catherine Fox, and it's time to stop this!

Catherine Fox is the latest character to follow the same TV trope in Grey’s Anatomy. There’s big and important news that she has and she’s keeping it from the people she loves. It’s the most annoying and hurtful type of storyline to follow.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 2.

Meredith found Catherine collapsed in her office, and it brought up a important medical diagnosis. Catherine’s cancer is potentially getting worse. Meredith decided not to keep it all to herself, and talked to Bailey about things. The two of them were able to convince Catherine to at least come in for a scan.

That’s when they found that there was something much more serious. Catherine has mets on her liver, and this likely means that the cancer is getting worse. Bailey pointed out that there’s a chance that these mets are benign, but Catherine is pessimistic about it. She did eventually agree to having Meredith and Bailey do a biopsy, though.

Catherine needs to be honest with Webber and Jackson in Grey’s Anatomy

This is where there’s a problem, though. Catherine refuses to tell anyone. So far, Meredith and Bailey know, and it won’t be long until Teddy finds out the full truth. Yet, Catherine refuses to let Webber know.

He needs to know. This storyline is one of the most selfish ones going. Catherine doesn’t want people to look at her differently, but Webber deserves to know that there’s potentially something seriously wrong with his wife.

She’s kept things like this from him before and he was so hurt when he found out. Now she’s doing it again. He is so in love with her (for reasons that I can’t understand because of who she is as a person) and she’s hurting him yet again.

At this point, this sort of storyline is no longer dramatic. It’s annoying. It’s a trope that we really need to get rid of. Let’s see the drama that comes from couples who are there supporting each other because it’s not like that sort of thing is easy. Webber will want Catherine to do one thing medically and Catherine will want to do another. This sort of support brings its own complications, and it’s time that the writers push themselves to bring us that instead.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
