Happy's Place will feature Reba McEntire singing (and potentially musical guest stars)
By Sabrina Reed
The more I hear about Happy's Place, the more excited I get about Reba McEntire's return to network TV comedy.
Over the past few years we've seen the Queen of Country on the small screen with roles on Big Sky, Young Sheldon, and as the lead of the Lifetime movie The Hammer where she reunited with her Reba (and now Happy's Place) co-star Melissa Peterman. She's also helped foster the talent of artists trying to make it big in the industry as a coach on The Voice. But Happy's Place is McEntire's first big comedic swing since the short-lived sitcom Malibu County and her comeback in the genre as a lead actress is a welcome sight.
When news broke that she would be playing Bobbie, a woman who inherits her father's restaurant and is then informed she'll be co-owning the establishment with Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), the half-sister she never knew she had, I know we all wondered if the show would have a theme song and if McEntire would be singing it. "I'm a Survivor," the theme song to Reba has gone down in television history as one of the best and memorable song openers for a show. And the hope has been that she'd strike magic again in an era where theme songs are few and far between.
McEntire did confirm that she's doing the theme song for Happy's Place. Deadline reports that during the summer TCA press tour, she said, "It’s written, and we’re recording it at the end of this month. Hope you like it."
The multi-hyphenated talent also teased that we can expect to see her character Bobbie singing in the comedy as well. The tavern has a stage so there will be performances in the show. What's more, we may see musical guests make appearances on the series. McEntire shared that her fellow The Voice season 26 coaches Michael Bublé and Snoop Dogg are interested in cameos.
The two artists haven't been announced as being cast but the inclusion of a stage in the show does suggest that Happy's Place will feature musical acts whether they're a part of the arc in the episode they appear in or simply close out the show with rousing, heartfelt, or somber performances. Either way that's bound to be an excellent element incorporated in the series.
Personally, I do wonder if we might hear some poetry from Belissa Escobedo as well. In her teens, she'd been a part of a Get Lit spoken word team who'd had a guest spot on The Queen Latifah Show and performed at the Hollywood Bowl after winning a poetry contest. "Somewhere in America" is an amazing poem and Escobedo continues to write so perhaps we may see her take to the stage on Happy's Place as well.
