Few American sitcoms of the 2000s are as popular as The Office. It's the rare case that an American remake of a British show is even funnier than the original. It began the "mockumentary" craze as a camera crew followed the often bumbling inhabitants of the Dunder Muffin Paper Company, where the day-to-day office life is often intersected with some bizarre goings on.

The show was a hit, running for nine seasons and 201 episodes. Its accolades include two SAG awards, a Peabody, and an Emmy win for Best Comedy Series in 2006. The series also boosted its cast to stardom with Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Ellie Kemper, Rashida Jones, Retta, and more becoming famous thanks to the show.

A major focus of The Office was the long-simmering romance between Jim (Krasinski) and Pam (Fischer). It took a few twists and turns before they finally got married in a fantastic ceremony and stuck with the show until the end. To many, their relationship was the true backbone of the series.

Since going off the air, there's been buzz now and then of a possible revival. The show does have multiple copies around the world, as numerous cultures have their own version of a bungling boss who thinks he's more popular than he really is overseeing a weird office.

Now, word has come that Greg Daniels and Michael Koman are working on a new spin-off set in the same universe. It's not sure if this will be a real connection with past characters or not, but a return to this wild comedy world does sound promising.

Speaking to People magazine, Jennifer Fischer shared that she had not been approached in any way for this new version of The Office

"No, I have not been approached. There is a spinoff in the works. Greg Daniels and Michael Koman are working on it. I don't know a lot of details, but I'm not involved. I haven't been approached about it."

It would be tricky to bring Jim and Pam in as Krasinski's movie career has taken off. Yet Fischer related she keeps in touch with her former Office co-stars, even doing a recent TV ad together.

"We have a text thread. It's called Office Peeps, and we all text on it, send pictures and updates and all the things you have on a text thread. We just have our text thread. But then, we all run into each other and get together on the side. But we have our text thread, it's going strong."

So far, this new version of The Office is still in the planning stages, so it will be a while before any casting is announced. It's also unlikely any of the original stars might appear. Yet it would be fun for Fischer to drop in quickly to give an update on how she and Jim are doing. It would also be the best way of linking the new series to the original as a reminder of just how funny The Office truly was.

The Office seasons 1-9 are streaming on Peacock.
