Murder in a Small Town, a new FOX mystery procedural is about to introduce viewers to a sleepy Canadian town where its strongest qualities should be how quaint and lovely it is. However, it's rife with murder and tragedies continue to wash up on shore. Thankfully, their Chief of Police Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) is a brilliant detective but this isn't just a series about a lawman who thought the idyllic setting wouldn't be as treacherous as the big city he came from.

No, the show will follow Cassandra Lee as well. She's the local librarian who's swept into casework right along with Karl because they're dating. Kristin Kreuk plays Cassandra and her character is meant not only to be Karl's muse and love interest but also his foil. She teased what to expect in a FOX Drama Club spotlight on Instagram.

In the reel, Kreuk says, "I love Cassandra. She's quirky, smart, and she's dating the Chief of Police." It's a quick summation of the librarian's place in the plot but the video does show that there's a depth to her as well. As Cassandra notes, she and Karl see the world differently and it does affect the way they both approach the crimes the police are solving.

It appears that Cassandra is a "heart first" person. While we haven't seen much of Murder in a Small Town yet, it does seem like her perspective is on the humanity of the people involved. She knows what it's like to not feel safe and to be afraid. The cases Karl works on do take a toll on her but this series is also a romance so there will be a playfulness to it as well.

There's a charm to the flashes of Cassandra and Karl's relationship that we get to see in the reel. He's a man who likes to puzzle out what's happening around him. I suspect that may inform how he operates in their relationship, too. Sutherland says in the reel, "[Cassandra] may be nervous but Karl sees through her. He sees the beauty, the eccentricity, the insecurity, and he loves all of it."

That's evident in the footage shown in the video. Cassandra is quirky and heartfelt. It'll be interesting to learn about her insecurities and where they might stem from. Kreuk points out that Cassandra is drawn to Karl in spite of what her brain is telling her which is intriguing. We'll have to see if she seems to go back and forth on whether or not they're right for each other or if it's simply the case work that serves as a source of tension in their romance.

What's exciting is the sentiment in which Kreuk says, "Both of these people get this gift that there's more than one chance at love in life," which suggests Murder in a Small Town will showcase Cassandra and Karl's relationship with the depth that it deserves even with this show being a procedural.

Murder in a Small Town premieres Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more coverage and follow us on X!
