NCIS season 22 is happening: Here's everything CBS has revealed about the new season (so far)

NCIS season 21 has come to an end, but don’t worry another season is officially happening! While CBS opted not to renew NCIS: Hawaii, the network handed out an early renewal to its long-running hit which wasn’t surprising at all. 

In its twenty-first season, NCIS remains one of the most-watched shows on CBS and shows no sign of slowing down at all. Fans are just as interested in the show as they have ever been and luckily the appears to be no end game in sight! While we have a break ahead with the summer hiatus, NCIS will return in the fall and we’ve rounded up everything we know so far about the next season to help our fellow fans get prepared for the new season. 

Season 22 should be a bigger season

After what has been the shortest season of NCIS in the show’s history due to the writers’ and actors’ strike of 2023, it is expected that NCIS season 22 should be a bigger season that is more in line with previous seasons.

Although CBS has not yet confirmed the episode order for season 22, it is expected that the next season will consist of 22 episodes. This has been the standard episode order for recent seasons of the show, sans season 21, and it’s expected that CBS will get back to the more standard episode order in the fall with the next season. 

No one is viewing season 22 as the last season of NCIS

There is always a chance that CBS could shock us ahead of the season 22 premiere, at the moment, there has been no indication that NCIS will be ending with its upcoming season. When renewing the show, CBS simply announced that the show would be coming back for another season and touted being proud to have the two shows back next season. 

“The Neighborhood and NCIS are the very best definition of a CBS comedy and drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment when announcing the renewals of The Neighborhood and NCIS. “They embody authentic storytelling with heart, humor, and family dynamics. We are proud to bring them back next season.”

If CBS was looking to end the show, it seems likely the network would have announced this up front as when the time comes to end the show the network will undoubtedly send it off with a major promotional campaign to celebrate the show’s rich history. But with ratings showing no signs of slowing down and the franchise remaining one of CBS’s strongest, it is highly unlikely that season 22 will be the final season of NCIS.

NCIS season 22 will premiere in the fall with the show remaining on Monday nights 

While there are going to be some changes to CBS’s schedule in the fall, NCIS is staying put and will continue to air at 9/8c on Monday nights. What will change is that the show will now serve as the lead-in for NCIS: Origins, the new prequel series that is taking the spot of NCIS: Hawaii which CBS has canceled after three seasons. 

At the present time, no premiere date has been announced for NCIS season 22, but it is expected that the new season will premiere in late September. CBS tends to kick off its fall lineup in the middle of the month, so it’s likely that the season will premiere on Monday, September 23, 2024.
