Remembering Shannen Doherty and her legacy on Charmed
Shannen Doherty had a long history in Hollywood, from shows such as Beverly Hills 90210 and movies such as Heathers. Long-time fans of hers have followed her journey through her career and her battle with cancer, even until the end when she passed away on July 13, 2024. One such show that I really loved was Charmed.
Her character Prue Halliwell was the oldest of three sisters and for three seasons, we got to watch her fight demons, try desperately to find love, and bond with her sisters Piper (Holly Marie Combs) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano).
Prue’s legacy has always been an important one to many who loved her. She was an older sister who was driven in her career while also flourishing in her role as a Charmed One. Prue had to make a lot of sacrifices growing up, especially after their mother’s death at a young age. But through it all, she never wavered in her strength and ability to do what needed to be done.
Even though we didn’t get to watch Prue accomplish all that she wanted to, she was a constant presence throughout the series. Whether it was a shared memory between Piper and Phoebe or watching how Paige learned to find confidence in working on a spell Prue had once worked on. She left a mark on her family that remained even after she was gone.
I have to admit, it’s hard for me to remember when I first started watching it, but I was always hooked on it when it came on. It got me through a tough time in my life and I loved watching the relationships that formed throughout the series. Piper was, and still is, my favorite character, but Prue had such a magnetic presence that made her one of my favorites to watch when reruns would come on television.
The series has had such a lasting impact that whenever I see something pop up about it, it sparks a feeling of happiness inside me. I even got the opportunity to meet Holly Marie Combs at a convention in 2018. It’s sad to know I won’t get the chance to meet Shannen herself, but hopefully, she knew the impact the show and the character of Prue had on so many over the years since Charmed first aired.
Doherty’s legacy on Charmed will continue to live on, not only through fans but also her co-stars and friends, who continue to talk and reflect on the show on The House of Halliwell podcast. Doherty was able to film five episodes before she passed away.
For those who want to relive the magic of Charmed and see Doherty shine once again as Prue, Charmed is streaming for free on Pluto TV. Plus, there are always reruns to watch on TNT. However you watch it, it’s a great way to remember the magic of Prue on screen and in life.
