Shrek 2 re-releasing in theaters was not on my 2024 Bingo card

No, you are not back in 2004 and this is no April Fool's joke (we missed that by a day!), it's true! That's right, Shrek 2 is going to play in theaters beginning April 12. Seeing this movie on the big screen again was not on my 2024 Bingo card. Then again, this year continues to surprise me!

Our favorite green monster is headed to the big screen this month and we are all welcome to step into his swamp. My age may be showing here, but my siblings and I had the Shrek movies playing back-to-back in the early 2000s. I still remember countless quotes from the movie and the iconic soundtrack the Shrek franchise introduced to a generation. Still, even fans are curious about why Shrek 2 is popping up as an option when we search for movies to watch.

The movie will be in theaters to celebrate the movie's 20th anniversary, can you believe it's been that long? Neither can we! The first movie premiered in theaters in 2001, and the sequel Shrek 2, followed in 2004. But that's not the end of the franchise! In 2007, the adventures with Shrek and Donkey continued with Shrek the Third, and the final movie, Shrek Forever After, premiered in 2010. There are also two spinoffs based on the adorable cat, Puss (voiced by Antonio Banderas), Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Shrek 2 follows Shrek and Fiona as newly weds who are ready to enjoy their happily ever after -- but not if Fiona's parents have something to say about it, first. When Fiona's parents learn about their daughter's marriage, they invite the couple to their home in Far Far Away. Imagine their surprise when they learn Fiona has married an ogre, and not the prince charming they had planned.

Shrek and Shrek 2 are both streaming on Peacock. Shrek 3 is only available to rent or purchase digitally, and the fourth installment is available on Prime Video. Puss in Boots is also only on digital to rent or purchase, but its sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is streaming on Netflix.

Will you be watching Shrek 2 in theaters on April 19? Or will you be digging out your DVD from your collection to watch?
