Besides wondering whether Katrina Law is going to be leaving NCIS, fans of the relationship between Jessica Knight and Jimmy Palmer have been left in limbo as well regarding where they stand with each other. The season 21 finale ended with Knight accepting the job at Camp Pendleton in the wake of Jimmy saying that it may be better to call it quits rather than suffering the loss of another person in his life.

With their romance left unresolved, we'll be heading into season 22 with the hopes of a necessary conversation happening between the pair about what they're going to do. And, rest assured, it will be happening. More than once according to the procedural's showrunner Steven D. Binder.

In an interview with TV Insider, Binder laid out what Knight and Jimmy's relationship is like when we're brought back into this universe six months after the finale. And, let me tell you, there's an element to it that shippers aren't going to like. The two aren't only single, Jimmy's seeing other people!

"They’ve settled into the new normal of not being together. Jimmy is dating. We’re going to learn a little bit about that. He’s been busy as a single man; that will make an appearance in the most inopportune time."

Will it be as inopportune as Jimmy finding out that Knight didn't tell her father that they were together? Possible. The drama is ripe for the picking but it won't stop there. A big part of the driving force of the season 22 premiere centers on a decision Knight makes as a hostage negotiator that she shouldn't and it puts her in serious trouble.

Her actions are the catalyst for yet another talk between her and Jimmy, Binder revealed. He described it as a "Part 2" and that they'll have another talk in episode 4 which is about preventing World War III. In the midst of the chaos and high stakes of that situation, the not-couple will have a conversation about the nature of their relationship.

"Jimmy and Knight are going to get a chance to have Part 3 of who and what they are and what they’re going to be and what they’re not going to be. There’s huge stakes that can blow up and then very huge stakes for these two in a completely different way. "

Notably, despite Jimmy dating, they're not over each other. Binder explained that they are handling things like mature adults but there's an awareness to how their relationship ended and their complicated feelings about it and the two of them as a couple.

Factoring in Jimmy's daughter Victoria further complicates the situation as she's still holding out hope they'll reunite. Humorously, and rather endearingly, she has been sending Jimmy texts in the morning like “breakup, Day 54; breakup, Day 55," clearly showing her continued investment in his and Knight's relationship.

The attention to the arc of their break-up should payoff for some great moments in NCIS season 22 and hopefully will result in a reconciliation between Knight and Jimmy at some point in the season. Shippers, keep your fingers crossed for that possibility!
