After seven seasons, ABC's The Good Doctor will close its practices permanently later this month. However, the medical drama isn't leaving without an emotional punch.

That said, the last two episodes will bring back a fan-favorite, Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas), to San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. She'll be reuniting with Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore). However, Claire will not offer her medical expertise to patients when she enters the hospital. Instead, she'll be a patient herself with an alarming concern.

Following a negative biopsy result, Claire gets a second opinion and screening, which reveals that she has breast cancer. The news shatters the happy homecoming, setting off a race against time for her treatments and survival. It's a hard pill to swallow, so let's hope there'll be a positive light for Claire, and Shaun and his team can be a tremendous part of it.

Breast cancer is not something to be taken lightly, and it has us worried because Claire is influential in terms of her character and as a person. It's a shock because a diagnosis such as this can shake up one's life and often lead to other repercussions.

Why did Dr. Claire Brown leave San after season 4?

Claire was appointed as Chief of Surgery in Guatemala, as revealed in season 5. Since then, Thomas made a few guest appearances in seasons 5, 6, and now 7. Per Deadline in 2021, the actress explained that her reasons for departing the series were based on "exploring different career opportunities."

Given her popularity as Claire, it makes sense that the actress has returned to the series for its closing episodes though we do hope we're not in for a storyline that bids a permanent farewell to her character.

The Good Doctor series finale date

ABC released the synopses for the final two episodes, depicting Claire's comeback and her ultimate diagnosis. While "Goodbye" (710) doesn't offer much, we can deduce that Claire might be the pivotal focus and the "important case" at the heart of the series finale.

"Unconditional" (709) - May 14: "Dr. Claire Browne returns from her work in Guatemala for a personal medical examination. Elsewhere, Dr. Glassman struggles to manage Hannah, who remains unresponsive to his attempts to help. Park seeks out the perfect last-minute wedding location."

"Goodbye" (710) - May 21: "As the doctors consider their futures, they work together to solve one of the most important cases of their careers."

The Good Doctor airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. New episodes stream next day on Hulu.
