The Librarians: Next Chapter has a new home, here's where the show will air!
The Librarians: The Next Chapter is landing on a new home! Find out where the sequel series is heading!
It’s no secret that The CW has had its share of issues in the last few years. The sale to Nexstar has led to a new direction for the network, which involves canceling practically every original series it once had, from the Arrowverse to Walker.
The CW now appears to only want scripted fare from other countries like Canada or the UK such as Wild Cards and the upcoming Joan. Their slate is more focused on reality TV and sports.
Among the shows intended to debut this fall was The Librarians: The Next Chapter. The franchise began in 2004 with a TV movie starring Noah Wyle as a scholar whose new job at the New York Metropolitan Library is a cover for him discovering magical artifacts around the world. It was a success that spawned two sequels.
In 2014, TNT began a regular series of The Librarians, with Wyle making brief appearances as his Flynn Carsen helps a pack of agents becomes the new protectors of the Library and its artifacts. It ran for four seasons, ending in 2018.
So fans were excited when it was announced the CW would have a sequel series titled The Librarians: The Next Chapter. The series would focus on a past librarian (Callum McGowan) who traveled from 1847 to the present day. He accidentally unleashes a wave of dark magic and has to team up with a new band of Librarians to stop it.
The new cast includes Jessica Green, Olivia Morris, and Bluey Robinson, with Christian Kane reprising his role from the first series. The show was to debut on the CW this fall only for the network to pull it from its schedule. But don’t worry, Librarians fans, the show is still coming and on a familiar home!
The Librarians: The Next Chapter is headed home
As announced by TVLine, The Librarians: The Next Chapter is going back to the source as it will now air on TNT in 2025. This is a return to scripted drama by the network, which had seemed to back off it.
Not only is the show headed to TNT but per Deadline, it's already been ordered for a second season. The acquisition could mean CW Studios will have more co-productions with other networks in the future.
Dean Devlin, the show’s creator, was happy about it as he told Deadline how the deal came about.
"It all started with a phone call I had with Sam Linsky at TNT. He’s been with the show from the very, very beginning in 2004 and I said it was very odd to be working on The Librarians without working with him. He said they were all really jealous about the show. Then about five or six weeks ago, he called and said, ‘Do you think there’s any chance you could move the show from The CW to us, and I said, ‘I don’t know but that seems kind of amazing if that could happen’. I had a phenomenal conversation with the people at The CW, it took a little gymnastics, but they were really supportive. They understood that the idea of bringing the show home was an amazing opportunity."
Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, gave his own statement on the jump to TNT.
"The CW is incredibly proud to have worked alongside Dean Devlin and the entire team at Electric Entertainment to create an extraordinary continuation of The Librarians franchise. We are thrilled that the series’ original network TNT loves it as much as we do and saw great value bringing it to their audience. It’s a first for CW Studios and we cannot wait for fans to experience this incredible next chapter."
Devlin also shared the producers are working to find a streaming partner for the show. While the 2014 The Librarians is currently on the CWTV website, it's unknown how long it will stay there.
"We’re only going to begin shopping now. Obviously, this move was so gigantic that it kind of occupied all of our thoughts, so even when we talked about what do we do about streaming and AVOD, it was like ‘Shut up’. But that’s the next thing we do, begin talking to streamers."
Having the show move back to TNT always made more sense, given it’s where the franchise got its start. It also seems TNT is getting back into the scripted drama game, which is something many can be happy about. Thus, The CW’s loss can be a gain for TNT to get a new series going that has a built-in fanbase.
There’s still the premiere date to come, but it appears The Librarians: The Next Chapter lives up to its name by returning to its old home for new adventures.
The Librarians is streaming on CWTV and the CW App.
