The relaunch of Brooke's Bedroom is all about timeless beauty on Bold and the Beautiful
By Sabrina Reed
Say what you want about The Bold and the Beautiful's storyline surrounding the relaunch of Brooke's Bedroom line, there is one part of it that's inarguably worthy of discussion--its attention to the timelessness of beauty.
There's been chatter online about whether or not it's appropriate or even wanted for Brooke to be donning lingerie for an ad campaign. But, honestly, I don't get what all the fuss is about. Her love for lingerie and the way it makes her feel has always been a part of Brooke's story. She has felt invigorated and empowered by lace, silk, feathers, and garters, and has wanted to help other women feel the same for themselves whether they have a partner or not.
While I haven't been a fan of Ridge pushing for her to step back into the spotlight, and had wished the impetus for the relaunch had come from Brooke's desire to do a new collection for her line, it remains true that the heart of this plot is about showcasing the beauty of older women through Brooke.
I can't help but think that this was influenced by The Golden Bachelor, a reality dating series that focused on the 60 and over women vying for the heart of a 72 year old man named Gerry Turner. The latest addition to the franchise, The Golden Bachelorette, is set to make its debut in September and it'll follow Joan Vassos, a 61 year old looking for love.
Like Brooke, Joan is vibrant and beautiful. She, however, has admitted that she's felt passed over and put out to pasture because of her age. It's as if the prevailing thought is that, given her age, she should just be shut up in her house to leave living to the young. That's a horrible thought but it is a reality many face as they get older, the dismissal of their wants and needs.
Brooke's storyline laughs in the face of the idea that older people cannot be sexy and in command of the world's attention. Or that they can't be the face of a major fashion line and wow an audience. The Golden Bachelor proved that's not true, The Golden Bachelorette is ready to do the same, and the relaunch of Brooke's Bedroom is prepared to be a part of the conversation as well.
Katherine Kelly Lang is 63 years old and she looks stunning in the new collection. There's no doubt about it. In some ways, this feels like a victory lap and a reminder of Brooke Logan's influence. She is the moment in this storyline, as she should be, and the messaging around the relaunch is just as important.
