It's time to end the Hope for the Future line on Bold and the Beautiful
By Sabrina Reed
The Bold and the Beautiful is embroiled in yet another back and forth over the fate of the Hope for the Future line. We go through this every time Thomas leaves because he is the brand's most successful lead designer and it starts to tank whenever he's out of the picture.
We've rehashed this storyline over and over again on the soap and it's because Hope isn't a designer. She's a philanthropic brand ambassador who has creative input and, sometimes, a specific vision for what she wants but ultimately can't put it to paper through a design. It's this limitation that leaves her beholden to the draw of whoever's been tasked with producing a collection for her.
For the past few years, if someone other than Thomas spearheads HFTF's designs the line fails. Even fashion icon Eric Forrester couldn't stop the brand from sinking when he helped. Now Hope has her brother RJ and his cousin Zende working together to assist her but her profit margin hasn't turned around like Forrester Creations' executive team hoped.
Though she's received another opportunity to course correct (even if it does come with strings!), it'd be surprising if she's able to do so. The problem is that the designs don't resonate with her consumer base like Thomas' do and she's seeing the results of disinterest in work that isn't his. We've gotten to the point where it just makes more sense for Hope for the Future to be discontinued and for the fashion firm to only produce its highest selling garments in some kind of legacy collection.
I say this because we can't keep having the line flounder. Sure, the writers could decide to make RJ and Zende successful in turning things around but we're just going to run into the same problem. If either of them steps down for any reason, Hope will be back in the same boat. No one else has this issue on the soap and to keep revisiting it has become stagnant and stale.
Canceling HFTF would be an opportunity for Hope to have a potentially dark storyline if it sends her over the deep end but she could come out on the other side and realize that a line shouldn't be her identity. It should be separate from her but also it's not even the lane she should be in because she doesn't live and breathe fashion.
Hope has consistently focused her energy on helping people. It's why the non-profit side of the business interests her and she excels at it. The brand's work with charities hasn't struggled in this era without Thomas by her side. That's because it's her expertise. She could still be a part of Forrester, just make her the head of their foundation.
Hope started the line when she was a teenager and it's been a central part of her character ever since but it's time for The Bold and the Beautiful to move on and put her in the actual field she wants to work in. Otherwise, we're going to be right back in this predicament in the future which isn't thrilling storytelling, it's simply repetitive.
