Why is Pixar's Turning Red back in theaters?

RED ALERT – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei Lee “poofs” into a giant panda when she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS). This unfortunate new reality for the teenager lands her in a multitude of awkward situations. Featuring Rosalie Chiang as the voice of Mei Lee, “Turning Red” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on March 11, 2022. © 2022 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Turning Red is in theaters! Yes, you did read that right. The 2022 Pixar film, which was made available to stream on Disney+ instead of having a nationwide theatrical release, is finally getting its due on the big screen.

News broke in December 2023 of the House of Mouse's decision to re-release its streaming-only Pixar movies. Soul hit theaters in January. Turning Red was the second film to make its big screen debut. Luca will be the final movie to go to theaters come March 22.

If you're lost on why these films that have already had a life on streaming are now going to theaters two to four years after their debuts, let us break it down for you. First, it gives these Pixar movies the theatrical releases they would have gotten had the pandemic not happened. None of them were intended for streaming. Second, marketing.

Soul, Turning Red, and Luca are drumming up excitement for Pixar's next movie, Inside Out 2. The sequel comes out this summer on June 14. Releasing the films “the way they were meant to be seen," also has the added benefit of keeping Pixar at the forefront of theater going families' minds. They're spectacular films that are supporting what's sure to be another great story from the famed studio.

So, if you're a big fan of Turning Red or you're interested in watching the movie on the big screen, now's you're opportunity to experience Mei Lee's story as the filmmakers intended. But don't worry, the movie is still available to stream on Disney+ as well, so if you find yourself singing along to 4Town and wanting to watch their scenes at home, you can!
