Why The Daily Show isn't new tonight (July 15) and won't be at the RNC convention this year
By Sabrina Reed
Don't expect a new episode of The Daily Show tonight on Comedy Central. The satirical news program is skipping a broadcast in the wake of the shooting that took place at former President (and now Republican nominee) Donald Trump's campaign rally in Butler, PA that claimed the life of Corey Comperatore and left two critically injured.
Trump was the target of the attack but sustained only a minor injury due to a bullet that grazed his ear. As such the shooting is being dubbed an assassination attempt and the FBI has launched an investigation into the deceased shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Typically in a presidential election year, The Daily Show has a presence at both the Democrat and Republican national conventions with correspondents on the ground reporting what's happening during the events and speaking to attendees. However, that won't be the case this year. The show has pulled their team from Milwaukee where the RNC is holding their convention. The cited reasons are "logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee."
There wasn't clarification on what those issues are or what the situation is that they're referring to but it likely has to do with increased security and potentially sensitivity to the recent shooting. The Republican nominee nearly lost his life and while it's The Daily Show's job to cover both sides of the aisle tensions are high at the moment. See the tweet from the show's X account below:
As the above tweet makes clear, The Daily Show will resume airing new episodes at 10 p.m. ET starting tomorrow, July 16. They'll, however, be filmed at their NYC studio and the Milwaukee events will be rescheduled. Despite correspondents not being on the ground at the Republican National Convention, it'll still be covered. Ohio senator, and author of Hillbilly Elegy, JD Vance was just announced as Trump's Vice Presidential pick which is something the show will weigh in on (they've already tweeted about it!).
Other topics likely to be discussed include the investigation into what led to the shooting and how the Secret Service missed Crooks as a national security threat as well as the history of political violence in the United States of America. There have been calls for the toning down of rhetoric from both parties as well as continued dispelling of the conspiracy theory that the shooting was fake and a calculated political measure meant to drum up support for Trump.
Tuesday, July 16's episode of The Daily Show will be hosted by Jon Stewart. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more TV news and coverage.
