Wild Cards is missing from CW's Fall 2024 schedule (Has the show been quietly canceled?)
By Sabrina Reed
Wild Cards, a recent hit on The CW, has been languishing in renewal/cancellation limbo since its season 1 finale aired on March 20. The comedic procedural became a darling on the network thanks to the chemistry between Vanessa Morgan and Giacomo Giannotti paired with the flare of series creator Michael Konyves.
But despite this, when questioned about a renewal, the repeated phrase is "soon." Now that CW has dropped its 2024-2025 schedule with the adventures of Max and Ellis nowhere in sight, it begs the question of it viewers, like myself, should brace for disappointment. The network has been figuring out the direction it wants to take in its Nexstar era and, as such, longtime CW fans have had to contend with the loss of many a fan favorite show. One such program, Superman & Lois, is sunsetting in the coming television season.
What's Wild Cards fate? The good news is that it hasn't been canceled...it just also still hasn't been renewed. When asked about the series, CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz shared the following with Deadline:
"You’ll probably be hearing more announcements from us very soon. That show did great. It grew 10% versus what The Flash did in the same spot the year before. So, here we are beating shows that everyone’s very romantic about. We’d very much like to renew that one."
"Very soon" likely means in a matter of weeks and hopefully not months. But Wild Cards isn't the only series we're waiting here news on. The CW has at least a roster's worth of shows that are hanging in limbo waiting on a decision to be made. This includes the pre-Nexstar era originals All American, All American: Homecoming, Walker and Wild Cards' fellow Canadian production, Family Law.
Schwartz' statement, however, is encouraging. In the 2023-2024 season, the procedural has performed more than solidly for the network. It's also produced a fanbase in its home of Canada and stateside as well. The CW was looking for a hit and they found one with this series, outside of issues with co-production, it would be a head scratcher if it weren't to move forward.
