RJ Decker hasn't been renewed yet but there's still hope for season 2

It's officially season finale season on the small screen, which means that not only are our favorite shows winding down for an extended summer hiatus, but those all important renewal or cancellation decisions are happening. While many shows have already been renewed, and others have been canceled, there's an even smaller group still awaiting word on their fate.

ABC's freshman crime comedy-drama RJ Decker is among the group of shows that haven't been renewed or canceled, as of this writing on April 13. The network renewed Grey's Anatomy, High Potential, 911, 911: Nashville, The Rookie, and Will Trent. However, RJ Decker season 2 hasn't gotten the green light, but that doesn't mean it's out of the fight.

RJ Decker season 2 hasn't been confirmed by ABC yet

Along with Shifting Gears and Scrubs, RJ Decker is one of the last three ABC shows hoping for a slot on the network's schedule next season. All three have a case for renewal, and just because Scott Speedman's crime dramedy is the only hour-long series left standing doesn't mean it's going to be canceled. The newbie series has time to further prove itself, especially after High Potential's finale.

Upon its premiere in March, RJ Decker was given the post-High Potential timeslot at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, which is an excellent place to be for a new series. Having one of the network's most popular shows as a lead-in is exactly where you want to be. But with High Potential season 2 ending on April 7, RJ Decker will take over the hit show's 9 p.m. timeslot on April 14.

On Thursday, April 9, with Grey's and the 911 shows off for the week, ABC re-aired the first three episodes of RJ Decker in order to give new fans a chance to check out the show. Clearly, ABC has a lot of faith in the new series and wants as many people as possible to tune in. The show's premiere boasted an incredible achievement for its 10 p.m. timeslot, and in the weeks ahead, viewership has been stable.

There are still three episodes left to air in the nine-episode first season, which gives the network an opportunity to measure how RJ Decker performs an hour earlier for three weeks. The first season finale airs on April 28, and if a decision on its future hasn't been announced before though, hopefully we won't be waiting too much longer for word on a renewal or cancellation.

Honestly, our hopes are high that ABC could bet big on maintaining the High Potential and RJ Decker pairing going into next season. This television season was unique with the Winter Olympics keeping shows off the air for multiple weeks, but with a different premiere strategy next season, RJ Decker could prove even more successful if given a run in the fall.

For now, keeping watching the upcoming new episodes and stream the series on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, and we'll share the latest news and updates from ABC!
