Ryan Coogler's The X-Files reboot, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, has nabbed a full series order at Hulu.
The show is a reimagining of Chris Carter's 1990 sci-fi series that followed two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
The original series, starring Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, aired on FOX from 1990 to 2002 and was cancelled after 9 seasons. However, FOX revived the show in 2016, and it ran for two more seasons before concluding in 2018.
Variety reports that Deadwyler and Patel will play new characters, rather than iterations of the ones Anderson and Duchovny played in the original series.
Coogler wrote, directed, and executive produced the pilot via his production company, Proximity Media. Executive producers include Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Simone Harris, original creator Carter, and Deadwyler and Patel. Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner.
Deadwyler is best known for Till, The Piano Lesson, and Rooster. Patel is best known for East Enders and The Odyssey. The duo appeared together in the HBO Max miniseries Station Eleven.

After the announcement, Coogler released a statement sharing his excitement for the pickup.
"I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience."
"I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television," Coogler continued. "I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”
The filmmaker has had an extremely successful year. At the 98th Academy Awards, Sinners received 16 nominations, the most in the award show's history. The film took home 4 awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Michael B. Jordan.
In addition to The X-Files, Coogler is working on a third installment of Marvel's Black Panther.
The X-Files is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
