NCIS fans have been able to keep up with new content thanks to actors Brian Dietzen and Diona Reasonover, who have a podcast called Partners and Probies. Their latest guest star was none other than Sean Murray, who has played Special Agent Timothy McGee since NCIS season 1. They had a lot to say about Mark Harmon’s exit and bringing on a new agent in the form of actor Gary Cole.
On their podcast, Murray had been asked about why he still loved doing the show, even with all of the cast changes. This includes the exit of Harmon, who played Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs until midway through Season 19.
Murray had worked with Gary Cole years before NCIS
When asked if fans or his love for McGee were part of the reason he continued, Murray admitted all of those factors weighed in.
“We’ve been so fortunate with the different iterations of cast that we’ve had come through, too.” He briefly touched on how Harmon began to make fewer appearances in preparation for Gibbs’s exit.
While Harmon has not appeared onscreen as Gibbs since exiting the main series, he is an executive producer behind the scenes for both NCIS and NCIS: Origins, which is the prequel series about Gibbs’s younger years.
Murray was also comfortable working with Gary Cole, who plays FBI agent turned NCIS Agent Alden Parker. He had worked with Cole in 1996 when he was only 19 on a television movie called For My Daughter’s Honor. Murray didn’t remember the name at first, but having known him and hearing about his joining NCIS made him go, “‘Ok, so Gary’s the guy,’ and I remember feeling like, “Yeah, thank God. Thank God.”
While on screen, McGee might have a different dynamic with Parker than he did with Gibbs, it’s clear Murray was extremely comfortable in welcoming Cole on board.
When NCIS season 23 ended, McGee’s son, Mason, got into a tense standoff with Wilmer Valderrama’s Nick Torres. Nick had noticed something off about Mason’s behavior while at NCIS, and it was clear Mason was in over his head with a situation he refused to talk about.
How McGee will handle this situation remains to be seen. But we are looking forward to seeing how Murray navigates this arc involving McGee and his relationships with both his son and work partner.
