July is celebrated for being Disability Pride Month. It is important to recognize the abilities and issues every day people with disabilities face. It is also important to recognize their contributions on the small screen.

Seinfeld is considered one of the greatest sitcoms of all-time. One of the recurring ones stood out due to the performance of the actor. That actor was Danny Woodburn. The actor was born with dwarfism and has been a vocal advocate for disability rights.

He was celebrated among critics for how he went about the character. During the series, Mickey played a working actor. He also played the character not as a punchline but simply as a person who developed relationships and had a strong personality, the same as the rest of the cast.

Both Woodburn and Michael Richards, who played Kramer, had great chemistry and had both spoken about how they enjoyed working together. The two of them paired off is physical comedy at its best throughout the series.

It adds more when watching his character of Mickey throughout the show's run, as his character played off each of the main cast members well.

In the season six episode, "The Race," Mickey and Kramer decide to work as a Santa team throughout the episode. In an interview with Cracked in 2023, Woodburn spoke of how he stood up for himself and the character, pushing back against harmful stereotypes.

"I was very self-conscious about the elf outfit. I didn’t want to fall into that trap. Because of that, I made the request to wear my outside coat on top of the suit. Larry David was very kind about my sensitivities around this at the time," said Woodburn during the interview.

It was a moment that showed he understood the comedy of the show but also the importance of his character and the representation he brought. He advocated for himself and who he was representing on screen, which led to important on-screen representation. It may be why Mickey is loved by both critics and fans of the show at large.

Through the years, Woodburn has spoken out and been an advocate for the People with Disabilities Act passed by Congress in 1990. He has also starred in numerous films and series since, such as Employee of the Month and The Neighborhood.

Seinfeld is known as a show about nothing and was true to the form. It is described as having an insensitivity to many different parts of culture. It spoke, though, and was able to find ways to integrate different parts of society. Mickey is a great representation of that.
