Matlock is bringing back a popular character while also confirming the episode count for the CBS drama!

By now, many know the truth about CBS’ reboot of Matlock as the network is detailing it in promos. At first, the show looked to be a spin on the 1980s NBC series starring Andy Griffith as Ben Matlock, a defense attorney whose age hid his sharp mind and skills in exonerating clients.

The new CBS series stars Oscar winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, who jokes about having the same name as the show. A retiree, Matty returns to the law firm of Jacobson Moore, claiming she needs work as her terrible husband died and she has to raise her grandson. She proves herself capable of using her wiles and people not noticing her to get information and lands a job at the firm.

However, the first episode reveals the truth: Matty is Madeline Kingston, a rich woman whose husband is very much alive and helping her raise her grandson. The couple lost their daughter to opioids and Matty believes someone at the firm covered up the dangers of the drugs. She’s thus going undercover to find out who.

The episodes have played on Matty helping in various cases while also carrying out her secret crusade. It’s had a few twists, but the show’s surprise plot has helped it in the ratings and already earned it a second-season renewal.

Among the challenges for Matty was in Episode 3 when the firm brought in their jury consultant Shae Banfield (Yael Grobglas), aka “The Meerkat.” A top-notch consultant, Shae’s skills lay in how she was basically a human lie detector capable of telling when folks weren’t being honest. Naturally, for someone whose entire work life is a life, Matty was worried.

Thankfully, she managed to escape Shae’s eye, making the woman believe Matty’s hiding feelings and nervousness were simply about trying a case herself. The character departed afterward, but it seems she’s coming back.

When does Shae return to Matlock?

Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman revealed to TVLine that Shae will not only return but in multiple episodes. Her next will be Episode 7, which will air on Thursday, Nov. 21. She’ll also appear in Episodes 11 and 13.

Urman also confirmed that Season 1’s episode count will be 18 episodes. That’s a bit lower than the standard CBS drama that normally goes for 22 episodes a season. However, this can work out for Matlock as the focus of the show is Matty trying to discover the truth at Jacobson Moore, and the writers think it’s better not to drag it out. Urman has confirmed the key mystery of who buried those files will be settled by the end of the season while it’s up in the air how the show continues.

Shae’s return will be good to match wits with Matty and it’ll be harder for Madeline to keep her secret. It seems inevitable one of Matty’s co-workers will discover the truth about her and possibly become an ally in her quest. Having it be Shae would be interesting as she’d be an expert at detecting some secrets among the bosses at the firm. It’s also good to see Shae interact with Olympia, including warning her of a romance with fellow attorney Elijah.

So Matlock fans can be assured Shae is returning to give Matty more headaches as the CBS hit continues its surprising first season!
