High Potential season 2 has officially come to an end, and it appears one of the show’s major cliffhangers may have already been spoiled as the result of a piece of breaking casting news.
Warning: The following contains spoilers from the High Potential season 2 finale.
As High Potential season 2 drew to a close, ABC’s hit crime drama left the life of one character hanging in the balance, and it seems their fate might have just been spoiled.
Late in the finale, Ella Quinn came through on her promise to reveal new information about Roman, which brought about a shocking revelation. Quinn shared the file belonging to an FBI agent named Lila Flynn who was working undercover and proved to be dirty. The report suggested that Flynn was selling intel and laundering money. The FBI’s theory was that Roman was working with her and that when she decided to come clean about her crimes, Roman murdered her with security footage placing him at the scene of the crime. Rather than letting this scandal come to light, Quinn was hired to cover it up.
After getting the intel, Wagner pressed his father for a contact at the FBI who could provide more information and headed out to meet with the source. He called Morgan to give her the update, and she immediately wanted to join him, but he chose to give her the wrong meetup time, which proved to be a move that might have saved her life.
When Morgan arrived at the location of the meetup, she found Wagner alone and severely injured, bleeding out from what seemed to be multiple gunshot wounds. The finale closed with Morgan calling for 911 as she held Wagner in her arms, leaving fans to wonder whether he would survive the injuries he sustained.
We thought we'd have to wait until the fall to learn whether Wagner survived, but it seems his fate might have been spoiled via a new report from Deadline.
Minutes after the High Potential finale ended, Deadline reported that Steve Howey is exiting High Potential and will not return as a series regular in season 3. According to the report, the season 2 finale marked Howey's final episode as a series regular on the show, suggesting that he will not have a major role in the show's third season.
It seems when Howey joined the show, he did so on a one-year deal, and he will not be returning as a series regular in season 3. Interestingly, it has been noted that there is a chance Howey could return as a guest star at the beginning of season 3 to wrap up Wagner's storyline; however, the character's future will be determined by the show's new showrunner.
This seems to suggest there is hope that Wagner will survive the attack, but there is also a strong chance that he will be killed off in the season 3 premiere. Given that Howey is exiting the show, killing his character off seems like the most logical move, but we'll have to wait to see what direction the new showrunner chooses to go in. The only thing that is certain is regardless of whether Wagner lives or dies, High Potential fans won't be seeing much, if any, of the character in season 3.
