There's some great news for Sullivan's Crossing fans, and that's of course that the fourth season finally makes its premiere on The CW on Monday, April 20. However, it's going to be a bittersweet return for the hit romantic drama series as there are some big changes coming to shake up not only the lives of the characters but also how viewers interact with the show.
As the season 3 finale teased, Sullivan's Crossing season 4 will be diving right into the unexpected love triangle between Maggie and Cal and Maggie's husband Liam, who made a surprise return at the worst possible moment. But that's not the only change in store that will impact the very fabric of the series. The new season will be without one of the show's central characters.
Before the season 4 premiere, Scott Patterson was announced to be leaving the show after three seasons playing Sully, and the actor revealed his reasons for his abrupt exit. Sullivan's Crossing will navigate this new era without one of its titular characters, and series star Morgan Kohan has previewed what his absence from season 4 will mean in particular to Maggie.

Kohan spoke with Swooon prior to Sullivan's Crossing season 4 premiering on The CW and chatted about what's to come in the new season. While she provided some insight into Maggie's headspace regarding Cal and Liam's newfound push and pull in her life, the actress touched on how Maggie will move through life without her father in the picture since he's still off in Ireland.
Echoing what has been said by showrunner Roma Roth, Sully's absence won't be dropped and never spoken about again in the season. He will remain part of the show and storyline, as Kohan revealed that the characters and the viewers will be experiencing and feeling his exit together: "It’s kind of addressed throughout the season. We get to find out as an audience what’s going on."
When asked how Sully being gone will hit not only Maggie but also the show, Kohan didn't delve too deeply into the storylines we can expect this season or speak directly to how she feels about Patterson leaving the show. But it seems that our concerns about the show changing with his exit aren't totally unfounded, as Maggie will be missing a key support system in her life.
"He was definitely a support for Maggie, one of the big reasons for her to come back to the Crossing, too, right? So finally getting that father figure that she was wanting and to have that not as present in her life while all of this stuff is going on… I think she could use all the support she can get," Kohan told Swooon about Maggie's new chapter without her father in her life.
All in all, it's unfortunate that Sullivan's Crossing season 4 will be moving forward without one of the stars and characters that helped define the show. But we can't say that the show will be lacking in the drama department, given the jealousy that's brewing for Cal about Maggie's proximity to Liam. Hopefully, the series will continue to deliver the heartfelt stories we've come to love.
Sullivan's Crossing airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
