It was all drama in The Bachelor season 29, episode 3, and a lot of it was thanks to Rose telling porky pies and getting caught out. However, part of the drama was medically related.

Beverly Ortega had to leave the Bachelor Mansion during the episode, and not because Grant Ellis didn’t give her a rose. There’s a chance she would have made it through a little longer, but medically, she needed to leave. Now ABC has confirmed the reasons why.

What happened during The Bachelor season 29, episode 3?

Beverly was set to go on her one-on-one date with Grant during the episode. However, just before, fans learned that she needed to leave immediately.

No, she didn’t choose not to be a part of the competition series anymore. Instead, it was a medical need that sees her leave the competition. We knew that meant it was serious. Some people do get ill during the show, but they end up just missing out on a date or an event and return the following week.

Why Beverly had to leave the Bachelor Mansion

Beverly shared on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast that she had been diagnosed with appendicitis. She had to have emergency surgery, and that took her out of the rest of the competition.

To be fair, appendicitis does involve major surgery, even though it’s mostly keyhole surgery now. It takes weeks to recover fully.

According to ABC, Beverly explained that she woke from a nap in excruciating pain and was throwing up for 12 hours. She didn’t think it was so serious at first, believing it to be a bad stomach bug or food poisoning. However, she had to go to the ER, where doctors diagnosed her with appendicitis.

Beverly needed to stay in California for the surgery, with her mom flying out to be with her and get her home safely once she was cleared for travel.

The Bachelor airs on Mondays at 8/7c on ABC. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
