The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins pulled off a rare achievement for a TV show

The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins gets better as each episode passes.

Sometimes after the pilot episode of a series, things go haywire. What started as a strong concept evaporates quickly when the story begins to get going. That was not the case during the first season, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins on NBC.

During a summer rewatch, I've quickly discovered that the show comes into its own as each episode passes. More importantly, the characters surrounding Tracy Morgan's titular character get stronger and stronger as the season passes.

Take, for example, how they used Rusty, played by Bobby Moynihan, just enough throughout the opening season. Sidekick characters can get old, but the way they use the SNL alumni is perfect throughout the first season.

There is also a great payoff to each episode. Every episode shows that the characters, although flawed, do have heart. For example, "You may hug your hero" (episode 5) has an amazing scene at the end that tugs at viewers' heartstrings.

As Reggie tries to hold a football camp at the same time as his rival, things quickly fall apart. But realizing this, Reggie gives an inspiring speech to the kids unprompted. It is a great moment and a stronger part of the first season.

The showrunners also establish a strong relationship dynamic between Monica and Brina. Despite Monica being Reggie's ex-wife and Brina being his fiance, the two get along. The relationship seems real and understanding. Instead of going for the cheap gimmick of the two hating each other, they seem to have a genuine friendship.

Daniel Radcliffe, who is best known for Harry Potter and likely will be for all eternity, really shows his comedic chops in this series. It is a pleasure to see him use both his British humor and acting chops.

Pairing Radcliffe's character, Arthur, with Megan Thee Stallion as a love interest was a genius move. You would not think the two would work as a duo, but the comedic timing and chemistry between the two are hilarious.

As you watch The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins season 1, you'll find the show continues to have topical references that are both hilarious and self-deprecating. From making fun of other athletes such as Kyrie Irving to references to the actors themselves, it adds a clever touch to the series. The fact that the series references Elijah Wood, who is often mistaken for Radcliffe in real life, shows the brilliance and ability.

The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins hopefully will explore more of each character and how they work together to repair both Reggie's and Arthur's reputations in season 2. One can hope they continue to do it just as strongly and timely as they did in season 1 and that The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins can continue its momentum into its next season.
