It looks like The Rookie fans can expect a top villain to make a bold return in season 9!
The Rookie is no stranger to some compelling characters and often twisted criminals. One of the most recent, and worst, was Liam Glasser (Seth Gabel). He debuted in season 7 as a suspected serial killer who attacked Nayla (Mekia Cox). Glasser showed his conniving side by arranging for billboards to defame the officers for “framing” him.
Sadly, legal technicalities and Harper’s own behavior led to Glasser's release before trial. He pulled more moves to set up a patsy for his crimes and discredit the prosecution more. In the end, Glasser got a guy to falsely confess to his murders, so he was freed. The only bright spot was that his wife now knew what a monster he was and was divorcing him.
When last seen, Glasser had lost custody of his kids and he and scheming lawyer Malcolm (Sean Patrick Thomas) seemed intent on pulling shady moves while Glasser also warned Nolan (Nathan Fillion) that this wasn’t over. This seems to set up an inevitable return.
Speaking to Deadline, showrunner Alexi Hawley confirmed there are plans to bring Glasser back, as he warns Glasser may guilt Nolan for saving his life from the father of one of his victims, and that may haunt him.
“Glasser’s threat was, in a perverted way, like, 'You saved my life,' means that whatever comes after this is on you. Not that I’m coming after you, but once I kill again, the bodies that are on me, ultimately, you have something to do with those because you saved my life and then you set me free a little bit.”
Hawley added that Glasser’s talk on how past serial killers paused when they had kids was another dark threat. After all, he no longer has custody of his children, so he has far more freedom to act and may be back at it soon.

Hawley was cagey on just when Glasser would reappear. After all, the big push for the start of season 9 will be the team trying to save a kidnapped Tim and Lucy, so other plotlines may be held back. Harper will also still be facing consequences for threatening Glasser, which could hurt her career.
“I think Glasser is a smart villain, it’s why he got away with it is because he was doing a DNA buffet with his victims, and he was burying them in another serial killer’s grave. He’s smart, so I do think it would take us a little while before we would get onto whatever he might be up to next. It’ll definitely be season 9, I don’t want to wait too long to see him again. But I’m not sure exactly what part of season 9.”
Hawley did give good news that Glasser would be leaving his family alone, if only because he’s smart enough not to draw attention by going after them. Yet with his twisted desire to kill and his grudges against Nolan and Harper, whenever Glasser returns, he’s going to make The Rookie season 9 a more exciting watch.
